Hi guys,
I added new line to my family plan 2 weeks ago in order to get DASH windows mobile promo. Now due to this new sms increase i was thinking of canceling that line. Can this be done since it's been only 2 weeks? i just got my bill with the notice today. How long do i have to cancel? here's said 30 days but on howarforums someone said 14? Wanted to wait as long as possible so i could get the rebate for phone and i don't know if that 30 days cancellation period ('buyers remorse' policy)when you add new service matters in this case?
Thanks

If you cancel now you have to return the phone. Trial period 20 days, so wait another 10 more days

Thanks omniviper & dairymtu for your responses, but when i was ordering dash i was told that for this promo, cancelation period is extended to 30 days so i still have to wait more. That's why i asked how long do i have for cancelation based on new contract terms(sms increase) since my bill with the notice arrived yesterday.
omniviper please post how did it went for you when you call to cancel.
Thanks again

coalminer said:chokaay said:After reading MUCH mis-information here as well as in other forums, let me clarify some things:

1) This "excuse" for getting out of your contract SEEMS to be working for people, but it's a YMMV... especially if you have a Messaging Bundle added to your line(s) and you never go over your messages. (For example, if you have an Unlimited Messaging plan on your line, how are you going to argue this change in pay-per-use messaging is "materially adverse" to you? )

2) You CANNOT cancel your line/account, and then expect to port your number somewhere else. Once you cancel your line with T-mo, you lose your number... period. If you want to port your number elsewhere, it would be wise to notify the T-mo CSR of this intention so they notate your account and give you a few days to port your numer elsewhere.

Hope this helps!

I agree that you should try out services in your area prior to cancellation of a T-Mobile line.

However, as to #1, do you have any direct evidence that this is the case? Based upon indications on T-Mobile's website and anecdotal evidence from forums such as HowardForums, I have not read of a single instance of someone being denied based upon a text message package. Denying you would implicitly mean that you would have to retain your text message package forever in order to avoid being affected by the change. It doesn't seem that T-Mobile is making that exception. In my case, I only send perhaps one or two messages per month and the cancellation was agreed upon so quickly that I cannot see how there was any review whatsoever of my account.

Also, as to #2, the T-Mobile representative asked me when I wanted my service to cancel and if I wanted to port my number. Obviously this isn't always going to be openly offered, but it is perfectly within their ability. I declined to port my number, but I did ask for cancellation to be on April 30 (to fulfill my 180 day requirement with Amazon). Again , porting a number should be no problem at all as long as you make it clear to the representative.

Some of the things you stated were very good advice and did clear up some misinformation. However, these two points at least seem to contribute to further confusion.

In response to your post:

1) Yes, there are people who reported being denied because of messaging packages or non-use. A few of them even posted on HoFo, like the guy who had to speak with 7 people and still can't cancel without ETF. So YMMV. However, this excuse seems to be working for many people.

2) #2 says that you can't CANCEL a LINE or ACCOUNT with T-mo, THEN expect you to port out. Once you cancel a line and/or your account, you lose your line AND phone number and CANNOT port. This is NOT up to T-mo to decide... it's just how Number Portability works with ALL carriers. You MUST make it clear to the CSR that you intend to port your number... and DO NOT have them cancel your line/account (once your number ports, it closes your T-mo line/account automatically).

you can always cancel and then resign up with T-Mobile using a spouse's SSN, if they are not on the account or have a corporate/other line.

30days is for CA i think by law. Other states are 20 days. Are you in CA?
Mine was 20 days and i ordered in March. I plan to stay with T-Mobile but on monthly rather than contract but this is not possible with this ETF thingy so won't work for me. Unless i cancel and go to another provider.</blockquote></blockquote></blockquote>

No i am in NY, but i am pretty sure that CSR said 30 days with this offer(otherwise 14 or something)when signing me up. Now i am confused, also i'm not sure how long you have to cancel when you get sms increase note(seems like it's only 14 days)?
Thanks

My girlfriend and I just finished cancelling our lines tonight. Mine went without a hitch. Hers, we had to call 3 times to find someone who knew what they were talking about. If you have a hard time, try calling the 800 number instead of 611. Also, it may be better to call from a different area code, since sometimes you are routed based on that.

Anyway, the CSR read me tmobile's policy given to him about who can cancel and have the ETF waived. Two types of people cannot get this waiver:

1. Those who have a messaging packaging currently
2. Those who have had no text messages in the last 3 billing cycles

If you are either of those, you may want to change your status and call back in a few days, though based on simple contract law, they materially breached it and you should be able to exit for any reason (however, don't give them any other reasons besides the increase in text messaging fees since they just use that against you). We dealt with one of the rudest CSRs and managers I have ever spoken to. So much for their wonderful customer service. I hope this helps!

Here is my story: I upgraded my phones (3 line family plan) last month (03/04/2007), received all the rebate checks by the end of last month. So I called Tmobile on 04/01 to close my account. CSR first tried to persuade me to stay with Tmobile. I said no. I also said that I wanted to port my phone numbers, then the CSR told me that he would follow up in 25 days to remove my ETF fees. After 10 minutes, I called again, I was confirmed that is the case.

The I picked my phones from amzon (I plan to switch to Cingular). Instead of shipping my phone via 2 day shipping, Amazon.com shipped my phones via UPS ground shipping. I am very upset since Cingular started charging me on the day I ordered the phone. I called Cingular to cancel my acocunt, Cingular offered me 450 minutes family plan (for 3 line, the monthly fee will be $40 + $10 + $10). I said I can not accept this offer because amzaon.com will charge me $250 per phone. The CSR was really trying to keep me. She offered waving my activation fee, plus that she will follow up after 181 days to change my rate plan.

I am a very happy person now: within a month I received 6 new phones (3 from Tmobile and 3 from Cingular).

When did TMO send those notices, with the last bill? I don't know if I trashed them.

I jumped on Dash deal on March 4th, ordered 5 lines/ family plan. And the 1st bill has not shown up online up to now. So shouldn't I have received those notices, is it? Can I still call for cancellation w/o ETF.

alert mods

I called them up , and they said i do not qualify for a disconnection without ETF , they gave me 30 bonus messages valid for 30 days..

alert mods

I went for the dash deal last march. I have only been on my contract for a month but a loytal TMO customer for 2 years already.

Ok here''s the update. After talking to around 8 CSR's, here is what I picked up
1) No deal on getting a free phone to "persuade" me to stay. I tried using different stories from losing my dash on a fishing trip and going back to an old 8890 (which i really still have) to breaking the screen blah blah. You get creative. I was however eligible to get "super discounted" deals on a few phones so that I can stay. They offered me these phones
t509s -50
t310- 50
c195s- 50
razr v3- 80
6103 - 80

2) I'm going to try again a few more times before i call it quits. I'm sure it';s possible. I just have to find the right CSR to give me a free phone. Oh yeah, if you do stay with tmobile and get another phone, your contract on the dash is automatically cancelled and a new contract is made without the ETF. Might as well take advantage of that small benefit. I was wondering if i could combine this with a phone with rebates.... but the rebate specifically say it has to be 11 months after getting a new phone.... DRAT

Guys there is no 'qualification' .. they changed the contract.. period.. doesn't matter if you use it or not.. i don't use it and I was able to cancel..
if they say you don't use it, then try to ask if you don't use your phone for a month will they waive off the monthly charge .. !! NO !! because you signed the contract to pay xx amount no matter if you use it or not.. so doesn't matter if you use text messaging or not you can cancel.. and they have no right of determining what 'material change' is.. as long as it is even 1 cent change that is 'material'...just say that you don't agree to paying higher charges ..

Did they give you a price for t619?

Good luck getting a new phone for free - I tried this past June/July and gave up after about my 3rd or 4th call.

im going to call now to see what the discounts on the phones are. a more comprehensive list coming up. Considerign the prices, I see these phones going for like 100-150 on eBay depending on the model. Expect like a 40-50$ profit if you sell them

I think i would still have to pay 200 $ as termination fee to wirefly , so i would go along with T Mobile..

Do you have to sign a one year contract or two? thx.

T-Mobile contracts are now a standard 2 years. you can get a 1 yr contract for a $50 premium which is what the folks over at howardforums adamantly advocate.
