"Discovery Channel shuttering stores": NEWS LINK

I sincerely feel bad for the 1000 workers, and hope they go on to better things.

I also see the potential for store closing (blowout?) sales.

Their price is very high, that's the reason for their closing.

I've had my eye on a few overpriced gadgety things. Looking forward to a sale.

Condolences if you are affiliated with the stores.

They just closed the store in Burlington MA and what you can expect is a clearing out of everything over a 4 week (apporox) span. They start with everything at around 15-25% off and each week they increase that. In the last few days everything (including store fixtures) was about 70% off. Nice for the stores that have some of the Nav systems and telescopes. But expect most good stuff to be gone that 1st week.

Wonder if they'll use an outside firm like CompUSA. That would really suck.

Sounds kinda stupid to me...I bet they make 80% or more of their gross sales in the 4th quarter. Couldn't they just close down in Jan. 2008?

I know that would seem to make sense. But when you're looking at corporate books at that level, the losses outpace the profits. Even though sales my increase to some significant degree in q4 because of Christmas, so do operating expenses. But a more likely motivation is; if the stores are bleeding money every week right now, and you're not going to attempt to institute a ground up rehab, the best thing is to pull the plug as fast as possible.
You can bet the board knows where their capital is going next, and it's a better bet.

I have to agree here. I stopped at their store in the Mall of America and the prices blew me away! Everything I had looked at on line was cheaper than in the store.

The prices were so high, then I visited the Discovery Channel Store located in a mall.
Good Lord, I had to steal 3 things to "equal" out the 2 things I bought.

You can pretty much count on it. Seems to be standard practice.

Hello! Just called the Discovery Channel Store in Green Hills Mall, Nashville, TN. They are closing but are not running any "sale" or discounted merchandise as of yet.

I hope they take the extra capital and invest in more "Planet Earth" or similar series.

Hmm.. it doesnt seem all that long ago that they bought out
"The Nature Company" Oh well here's hoping for some decent
deals!

I went to the store in Tysons Corner, VA yesterday; everything was 30% off.

40-60% off at the store in Milwaukee today. Picked up a telescope, much cheaper than any price I can find online for it. Did some x-mas shopping while there too.
