Thanks RedCelicaGT. I'm going to call and see if possible to port my #s over to them. Keeping fingers crossed!

EDIT
Tried a chat with ViaTalk, and here's the response I got (Brooke sure is busy today )
Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Brooke'
Brooke: Hello, how may I assist you?
you: Hello. I am a current sunrocket customer, and according to web rumors they are out of business as of today. If I sign up for your service, can I port my two current phone numbers (i had two "gizmos") over to your service?
Brooke: Unfortunately, at this time, we can not guarantee that SunRocket customers can port an existing number due to the current situation...
you: Do you have any idea when you'll know if porting will be possible?
Brooke: Normally, they are required to release the numbers to customers so they can go to another provider, but it is not guaranteed.
you: Ah I see..I appreciate your taking the time to answer the question
Brooke: Unfortunately I do not. We can not get in contact with SunRocket at this time.

RedCelicaGTI'll post an update when i find out from billing what will happen in case of a bankruptcy/buyout.

Duh? If they go out of business then you lose your money, pretty simple.

Hmmm, my service is still working. Wonder what they will do with current customers.

Vitalk is now the closest option to SR (even though I did not advocate them in the past). Also if you can wait they have a Freeshipping Code:

check out www.vtinside.com

We're expecting an uptick in sales over the next few days as a result of whats been going on over at SunRocket. To help out those affected, we've made available a coupon good for free ground shipping, which is good even in combination with our current 2 for 1 promotion. The coupon code is SHIPFREE. Tell your SunRocket friends about us if you're happy with the service, from the look of things it appears they're going to need other options in the near future.

Another helpful information is that since the website is still active please save your phone bills and account information pages and what not so that you can use those when you submit request for number porting.

I looked at them before deciding on SR last year, their "14 day trial" and no refund policies really hurl.

I would doubt that folks that have been burned on a pre-pay SR account will want to sign up for another pre-pay VoIP account.

I paid $99 nearly a year back, so if mine quits working today I am out very little - others are not so lucky (friend and family that signed up for $199/2 year deals not long ago).

I'm a current ViaTalk customer and have been happy for the most part with the service. I would mention however that I have had nothing but problems with faxing. I know they don't support it and all but I thought I'd throw that out there in case someone was wanting to be able to fax as well!

If they go bankrupt there is no one to sue and no way to reverse CC charges - there will be no one to pay up and no money to pay out. They may sell off assets and use the money to pay off creditors, but the rate would be pennies on a dollar.

Will Vonage be soon to follow? What VOIP are still left beside ViaTalk?

alert mods

Does this mean people who got 2 yr for 199 is going to loose their money? I am one of them who signed up for service around in March 07 on B1G1.

Looks like we r gonna loose our money and won't be able to use full 2 yr of service.

Can we do anything? As of today afternoon I was able to make/receive calls and able to login to my account.

Anyway we can recover our money from SR?

which are the best (cheapest) other alternatives at this point? I haven't really been paying attention to any other deals because I THOUGHT I was now good until 4/2009 after re-upping my 2 for $199 deal.

And boss is gonna love me know. They just signed up 2 moths ago for the same deal. They may have gotten lucky since I'm not sure their number ever ported. Hopefully they can still open a CC dispuite.
I'm out of $600 now...2 accounts for me and one for son. Lovely!

Is best option, for someone like me who doesn't want to lose phone number I've had for last 15 years, to buy something like a tracfone and port number temporarily?

I just spoke with ViaTalk. Here is a post i recently placed in another thread:

I'm wondering if ViaTalk is a viable candidate in leiu of sunrocket. They have 2 years and 2 lines for $199. Here is my conversation with the CSR:

You are now chatting with 'Brooke'
Brooke: Hello, how may I assist you?
you: are you aware of the sunrocket VOIP company?
Brooke: Yes.
you: I'm looking to sign up for VOIP service, but am concerned about my contract being fulfilled. I lucked out and tried signing up just after they stopped taking customers.
you: how solvent is ViaTalk? what would happen to my contract if the company was no longer solvent
Brooke: We are a debt free company and are financially backed by our sister company HostRocket, who is a multimillion dollar company and also dept free.
you: good. IF something were to happen...Say the company filed for bankruptcy, what would happen to my contract?
Brooke: You would have to contact the billing department, unfortunately, I am not certain. The number is 1-866-626-7150 option 2.
you: thank you.
Brooke: No problem, have a great day!
you: in case i sign up, are you offering any promotions, currently?
Brooke: Yes, a free second line and a free year of service.
Brooke: With the purchase of a year at $199.00.
you: good. thank you.
Brooke: No problem, have a great day!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll post an update when i find out from billing what will happen in case of a bankruptcy/buyout.

EDIT:
Billing has no clue what would happen to their contracts, but assures me that ViaTalk is debt free.

Just because the company is debt-free doesn't mean it can't go bankrupt. They could have a small cash balance and if they burn through cash everyday (like every other VoIP company), then they could run out of money and go bankrupt.

Well, aside from the fact that the customer support is absolutely horrendous and the techs seem to be absolute morons, you can try allo.com as they also offer a $199/2 year deal.

I use Callvantage from AT&T and I am quite happy with them.

Linky!

Wow. I just cancelled with SunRocket on the 29th of June. They said that it would take up to 30 days to refund my cash ($259). I hope they pay it back - actually since I cancelled before this who fiasco, they better pay me back! If they don't, what can I do?

Or that they'll be debt-free tomorrow, next week, next month, etc... Even if they have a positive cash flow, a poor decision on an acquisition in an attempt to expand could burden them with debt. "Past performance is no guarantee of future results" and all that mumbojumbo.

To those stuck with worthless SR contracts, you have my condolences, but if you want to play out on the bleeding edge, you gotta expect to get cut every now and then. Be glad it wasn't for more.

I have sunrocket for 1 year + 3 month free. I already crossed one year by now. Right now I am in the 3 month free period. They have all my credit card details. Will they charge for anything? What happened to our credit card deatils.

Connection is working fine

how can i handle my ats phones? i unplugged it before i got in this thread, and it no longer went through voip resetting.. help!!

From the ViaTalk web page:

For all new annual VT_Unlimted custormers, ViaTalk is now offering two unlimimted phone lines for the price of one!* ViaTalk will also match in the form of a service credit, up to 12 months of free service for any prepaid contracts you have with any other phone service provider, for service switched to our network. Simply contact support after your order has been processed to receive your credit!

Sounds like you sign up with VT, then call them to get a credit for up to 12 months of your SR service. And it says "3 months free", so I guess you pay them $199 for one year, get 1 yr + 3 months + up to 12 more months free (free months tacked onto the end).

The deal they had up a few minutes ago - BOGOF was a better deal for most folks.

Dennis
