Quoted from The_Bad_Penguin from a different site (SD)....

Ordered the PS3 from Newegg, and had an issue with another order, so I live chated, and also asked (to be 110% certain) that the PS3 purchase would qualify for the PP 20% Cash Back.

According to the Newegg rep, no.

Only those specific items on the Newegg / Paypal webapge are eligible. All other purchases from the Egg are ineligible.

Maybe my rep was misinformed. Cancelled my order anyway, and offering words of CAUTION to fellow SD'ers who may purchase items not on that webpage and ultimately not receive the 20% Cash Back.

YMMV.

From the chat log:

Me: The PS3 for the PayPal 20%? Why not? What condition didn't I meet?

Alice: You only can get the promotion if you purchase the item in the website that listed.

Me: So, only those few items on that webpage are eligible for 20% PayPal discount at Newegg? And since PS3 not on that page, not eligible?

Alice: Yes, you are right. However, if you would like to keep the item, we would like to make an exception to credit you $10.00 on your order.

Hmm, I was going to pull the trigger on an xbox 360. What page are they talking about?

misinformed rep

Hmm thats strange I order a DVD Burner that was not listed and when I went thru the paypal process after I got the review order page it showed the promotion on there did yours not say it on the review order page?

I have been getting ready to place several orders, AMD CPU, Memory, Razer Headset. IF this is true, I will be extremely pissed. The web page I saw that mentioned the sale did not specify that. They should make it clear that only certain items are eligible.

#$%$%# Grrrrrrr #$$&%^&#

Paypal's Promo details are here, no mention of specific items:

I think the page on the email they sent you notifying the %20 rebate from Paypal....

http://promotions.Newegg.com/paypal/101607/index.html?CMP=OTC-PayPalHoliday07&ATT=PayPal&cm_mmc=OTC-PayPalHoliday07-_-PayPal-_-B0-_-Paypal

I did complete the transaction for the headset, Razer HP-1. I did see the note on the summary showing the 20% rebate. So hopefully the rep was misinformed.

Here the link PayPal/Newegg

Ack me too!

At the payment confirmation page when paying with paypal there is a line specifically saying Promotion: 20% CashBack via paypal or something like that.

look its a paypal promo, so paypal promo details apply....no mention of specific items at Newegg, in fact they mention a specific requirement for overstock, so I wouldn't be too worried, you could fight and win it, i ordered the sd1000 package, which is listed anyway on the Newegg page..but I wouldn't worry about specific items based on the paypal promo offer details page.

If that is true, that would be so extremely lame on Neweggs part. It was also be totally misleading advertising. And what would it matter to Newegg if Paypal is the one paying it?

One thing I noticed already is that Newegg is in the process of jacking up prices. A printer I was going to buy for $179 suddenly jacks up to $199 while in my cart.

Typical Newegg.

Likewise!

I'm confident that the 20% will work with ANY Newegg purchase from today through Wednesday. The terms & conditions mention nothing about having to purchase specific products. I feel that the Newegg CSR that the OP spoke to was wrong about the PS3 not being eligible.

I don't see an option to pay with paypal on Newegg when I check out. How does that work?

Just tried to place an order through Newegg using paypal and got

"We apologize that we are not able to authorize payment for your order now.

We encourage you to try again if you feel this message was prompted in error.

Newegg.com offers a variety of different payment options, from credit/debit cards and checks, to gift certificates.

To opt for another payment method and proceed with checkout, click here."

Blah, the only error is that I'd have saved too much with my order. I tried three times, PayPal account is fully funded. What a waste of time!

To confirm with you guys. I called, Newegg rep said it only applies to items that are listed on promo page. No other items.

jenbes said: I don't see an option to pay with paypal on Newegg when I check out. How does that work?

It's on the right side when you're entering your shipping address on the left.. there are tabs with various payment methods.

You can also click the promo PayPal button at the top that says get 20% off your purchase.

I doubt it. Nowhere does it say it only applies to those deals.

FYI I received confirmed information that all orders are valid for this promotion. Below is the conversation I had with an associate:

Thank you for contacting Newegg. My name is Danielle. How may I assist you today?
Scott: Yes I am writing in reference to order 84607XXX
Scott: I am being told by an associate of mine that that order is not eligible for the Paypal promotion..is this correct?
Danielle: Let me check for you. Just a moment...
Scott: Thanks
Danielle: Your order is eligible and you should be receiving the 20% refund from Paypal. This promo is through Paypal and is for any Paypal order on our site. You will receive the 20%, but it will come as a refund by 01/31/08 (per Paypal).
Scott: Ok because there is mass confusion in reference to this promotion in my office as others have been told by your associates that only certain items are eligible
Danielle: Yes, I apologize for that. Since the promo is run by Paypal and not Newegg, we have received some incorrect information.
Danielle: We have just recently confirmed the exact details of Paypal's promotion.
Scott: Alright Danielle..just wanted to follow up so there are no issues down the line and I wanted you guys to know that there was confusion so you have no disgruntled customers
Danielle: Thanks and sorry about the confusion.
Danielle: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
Scott: thats all..thanks
Danielle: Thank you for contacting us. I hope you have an Eggcellent day!

Now that makes sense. Good Job Stros.

Order getting completed now. Many thanks!!

Can someone help me out?

I never had experience with paypal promotions.

I just have to use paypal checkout to get the 20%.

Can I use a credit card payment through their system and still get the 20%

Or must I transfer money first to my paypal account then use that.

Can someone clarify this for me?

Will all forms of payment through paypal qualify for this promotion?

thanks.

I think paypal will retrieve fund for your verified bank account when you have 0 credit in your paypal account. Or it will charge to your paypal CC. That what happened to me.

Geez, homeboy77, have you added all that stuff up? The total rebate is only $50 (and I think that's across all stores, too).

When you checkout you have the option of using your bank account or a verified credit card that you've previously added to your account.

do they prorate the 20% discount if previously you have bought some stuff with paypal and you only have $10 of discount left out of $50, but the thing you bought would normally give you $20? sorry if this is confusing.

Two opposite views expressed by the Newegg associates. How do we know which one is right?

Just saw this on the Hot Deals website -

"Update (3:15pm EST): Newegg is pulling the 20% Paypal CashBack promotion off of their site as of now. Paypal purchases in progress which say "Promo: 20% Cash Back" are still eligible for this promotion, however new purchases may no longer qualify for this promo."

That's why (s)/he is 'getting ready to place several orders.' Rebate is 20% up to 50$ per order *if* you have multiple paypal accounts.

In hindsight this is a rather pathetic promotion. I got the e-mail from Newegg about the 20% promotion for PayPal checkout this morning. The e-mail stated "until 11/28/07" so I thought I would take some time later today when I was less busy to pick out some items. A few hours later and the promotion has been pulled already. They should have explicitly told us in the e-mail or on the site that there would be a very limited amount of purchases allowed before it expired so we would understand that PayPal set a small limit that would be reached quickly.

That way we could have decided to either put in an order quickly or not bother to waste our time on this.

Sadly, neither has Paypal . Every time they try a new gimmick, they make up the rules as they go along. At least that's how it feels, just as in the current promo. Basically, yes, the only requirement is that you pay through Paypal, but the payment can be money transfer from your bank account or credit card (although it's always better to use a credit card when paying through Paypal). But as it stands now, you better make sure that the merchant you're ordering from is still participating in the promotion at the time of your order. Also, no matter how much you order, your maximum refund will only be $50 per Paypal account.

When you checkout you have the option of using your bank account or a verified credit card that you've previously added to your account.

Be careful - you do have the option, but it will default to using your bank account. If you want to use your credit card (and yes, you DO want to use your credit card for all Paypal purchases), you have to select "other funding sources" and then change the funding source to your credit card.

If you use your credit card, your credit card issuer will help you if something goes wrong, including issue a chargeback if that's what's called for. Paypal doesn't like that, so they try to get you to use your bank account. Then they get the money, and no chargebacks even if something goes wrong. And that's why it's much better for you to use a credit card if you can. But I will add that most of these cautions are more important with eBay auctions, where you never know if your seller will turn out to be problematic. I don't think you'll have major problems with established merchants.

That's why (s)/he is 'getting ready to place several orders.' Rebate is 20% up to 50$ per order *if* you have multiple paypal accounts. said: That's why (s)/he is 'getting ready to place several orders.' Rebate is 20% up to 50$ per order *if* you have multiple paypal accounts.

It's up to $50 per Paypal account but not up to $50 per order, and if you're counting on it, you better check before you start purchasing. Here are the T&C from Paypal:

Paypal Terms & Conditions for Holiday Cash Back Promotion

Specifically, it says:
The maximum total amount of Cash Back per PayPal account is $50 USD..

Also, what I heard from two Newegg CSRs is that Paypal allocated a certain dollar amount to each merchant, and when that merchant hits that amount in sales, the promo is over. It's ridiculous, because it means the customer is in a crap shoot - how the heck are we supposed to know if Merchant X already used up their Paypal allocation, when the merchants themselves probably don't even know in real time?

Also, the terms and conditions of the Newegg offer did not specify that it was limited to only the items on that page.

It said:
Use of any promo code is limited to one (1) offer per order and product. Promo codes may not be applied to multiple products within the same order or to more than one (1) item of the same product.
The Paypal offer didn't need any promo codes. You just had to choose Paypal on the shopping cart checkout page.

And then it said:
To receive 20% Cash Back on your purchase amount (including shipping and taxes), use your PayPal account to make purchases on participating merchant websites by selecting PayPal as a payment option beginning November 26, 2007. Offer is available for a limited time only, as long as the merchant’s website indicates that the 20% Cash Back promotion is offered, but no later than December 10, 2007. Multiple purchases are allowed. Maximum total amount of Cash Back per PayPal account is $50 USD. Certain exclusions apply. Only United States PayPal accounts in good standing are eligible. See terms and conditions for complete details of offer.
Nothing there or in the Paypal terms and conditions (linked above) that limits it to certain items or to a limited quantity of items.

Paypal's terms and conditions even say that the Cash Back will also factor in shipping and taxes (it's in their link). I thought that was a typo, but it's straight from Paypal.

My guess is Newegg and the other merchants got blindsided by PayPal's quick end to the promotion just as much as their customers. Newegg has a good rep. PayPal does not. If someone is to blame for the fiasco, I know which way my finger is pointing. It would be nice to see some confirmation of this from Newegg, but with business you never know if you'll get it or not. They're all creatures without sould who will publicly tell you every other company they do business with is a saint.

Offer ended...

Newegg has a good rep? They did, a long time ago. They are very quick to jack up the prices but when a situation like this occurs they milk it because not only will it not cost them anything, they will profit from it.

This seems like deja vu. I encountered an archived thread a few weeks ago that had the same theme about PayPal not honoring its promotion midstream. For a moment, I thought I was reading the archive again!

wow, this PayPal situation is really causing a lot of grief for N E W E G G

see the thread on the Egg's own forums here for mucho disatisfaction...

A lot of people are confused, and disappointed.

Here is a thread where you can add your comments about the PayPal situation:

as for jacking up the price, Newegg isnt the 1st one doing that. it is Amazon!! that is all done by server side programs. IMO, that is just a normal business practice. Amazon is still one of my favor store, so is Newegg. Decent price + good customer service. that is how they are doing the business and keep their customers.

Skipping 15 Messages...

I was wondering this two since I ordered a Dell laptop that day.

I have to say I'm getting nervous about my order. Everything looks fine, Paypal says "pending" and Dell says "in production" and will be shipped on Tuesday (Insprion 1520). I ordered it on Monday, I'm more concerned about getting the laptop than the $50 at this point. I've heard stories about orders being cancelled because they didn't ship to a verified address. I had mine shipped to my work address which paypal has never seen before.
