Anyone have experience with goodman company split central air conditioners/heatpumps? They seem to be lower priced & have 10 yr warranty (no labor inc?). However, seems internet info (complaints), I have read, slams them for poor reliability. Dont know if these are isolated cases or real problem with goodman. Cant believe sales people any more. So, any advise on finding best deal on replacing split central air conditioner would be appreciated. Are there significant differences between brands or do they all have same/similar internal parts/stuff manufactured by same companies.
thanks

If you go to places like HVAC-TALK the pro's will mostly tell you that it's not the brand that matters, but the installer (what else would you expect them to say?). I'm sure that's to an extent true, but I certainly wouldn't buy a Goodman!

Well, I have a 13-year old Goodman 12 SEER heat pump and it's still going strong. Did have to get the contact starter replaced last year but that's it.

Thanks for tip on hvac talk web site. Seems goodman is no worse than other brands. I did find something very interesting. Company called Nordyne makes several central a/c branks, maytag/ frigidair/tappen/westinghouse. The maytag has a 12 year warranty , which also includes $250 max labor.
Anyone have a maytag airconditioner/heat pump? Seems like a very good warranty. But would like to hear from anyone who has one.

That correlates with Consumer Reports' reliability ratings for central air, which also ranks York very low and Heil/ICP in the bottom half.

The quality of the components vary, with Goodman supposedly using some of the worst, and from personal experience, Heil doesn't seem to be much better because in seven years our packaged unit has needed 3 blower fan controllers, 2 outdoor fans, an expansion valve, an evaporator pan, a motor capacitor, and something once acted up and wouldn't let the A/C be turned off. This is one of the few products where an extended warranty usually makes sense.

Goodman has had some reliability problems in the past but are doing very well now. They purchased Amana's HVAC division and are using alot of their technology. I purchased a split system last summer and when I picked it up at the wharehouse it did not have a brand name on it. They had stacks of Amana and Goodman logos and applied them at the distribution point. The cool thing about Goodman is that you can get actual information about the product from their website, all of the other brands hid the majority of their information from the consumer (me) and directed me to a local dealer. If you buy a Goodman just make sure the unit you choose uses a Copeland scroll compressor. Almost all brands use it.
