Safeway gave me a 10% off "savings award" coupon, even though my stimulus payment was direct deposited. I just asked the customer service desk if they would give me one, and explained I got my stimulus direct deposited so couldn't bring the check in to cash. However, the 10% savings award has a lot of limiting "fine print," which is nowhere to be found in the Safeway advertisements (or press releases, web sites, fatwallet threads, dare I say ANYWHERE on the internets.) Some of the language is pretty limiting... Here is what it says:Safeway / Vons / Dominick's / Genuardi's / Randalls / Tom Thumb / Pavilions / Carrs / Safeway

* Use this Savings Award at any participating U.S Store. This Savings Award must be presented at time of checkout to be valid. This Savings Award is only valid one day from the date of issue. This Savings Award excludes purchases of alcohol, tobacco, U.S. postage stamps, gasoline, money orders, container deposits, lottery tickets, gift cards, gift certificates, event tickets, amusement park passes, all pharmacy prescription purchases, Club Card savings, store coupons and sales tax. One Savings Award per household. Savings Award must be presented with Club Card. Final purchase is determined after all manufacturers' coupons, electronic checkout coupons and exclusions have been presented and deducted from the grand total at the cash register. Coupons cannot be copied or duplicated for redemption, and may not be sold. Note all the excluded purchases bolded above, including gift cards, make this coupon not so useful. I asked around Safeway and from what I understand, they will take this coupon when you use it, so you get only one shot at it. Therefore, I haven't yet tried using mine (it expires tomorrow). My Safeway does have a REAL nice selection of gift cards... so if I could buy say $1k+ of Safeway gift cards at 10% off and use them to buy other gift cards, I'd be all over that. But I'm skeptical it would work. I did try as a test, using a "$10 off $50 purchase" coupon to buy a $50 Safeway gift card, which had similar exclusions as the 10% savings award in its fine print. The $10 off coupon did not work to buy the Safeway gift card, and gave an "inadequate purchase" error at checkout. I'm also not certain that a Safeway gift card could be used successfully to buy other gift cards. Anyone else able to get much $ with their 10% "savings award"? |
