I'm guessing that whatever point you're trying to make, either you misunderstood a policy or many of us already know how they do returns.
The bigger problem is that no one can understand your post. Please clarify and I'm sure the community will help break it down for you.
My guess is OP used a $xx off of $50 coupon, and $xx was subtracted from the value of the return since the total purchase value no longer excedded $50.
That's what I got out of it, after reading it sideways.
If you purchase something with a coupon and then return it, our new POS *point of sale* system will return the item with a percentage of the coupon returned as well. It is a bit stupid but it is how they have changed it. The only thing to worry about that I've seen in the returns my store has done is that, if you buy something with an instant coupon on only that item and then return it, it still spreads that coupon out over all items. I don't think Staples corporate quite thought through this type of a return system very well in some cases, but with every new change there are always bound to be bugs and problems.

Now if you returned another item, then you would get less back on that item based on your description.

My apologies. I didn't explain it very well.
Sometimes the instant savings you get in a Staples is not instant on the item itself. It is applied as an in store coupon that is on our AD Prep "paperwork that gives us the coupon codes". This means that that 50 dollars that is supposed to be off ONLY on that one coupon that is supposed to be for that one item only gets spread over all items if you return it. You are essentially getting less back for the other items if you return them... It really doesnt make sense to do it this way, and I hope that they fix the instant savings coupon thing soon.
Also, sometimes the new system will ask the associate to apply or not apply a coupon during a return. Sometimes with the new system how the return is "performed" will let you walk out with a coupon profit -- meaning a new register coupon is given to you above what you gave at the time of the original purchase. It is unpredictable.
