I just had some salespeople come to my house, vacuum and shampoo my carpet with the latest Kirby.....I was impressed, we were already in the market for a vacuum cleaner. So I bought it.

I've heard of people spending well over a $1,000 for them. I felt good about getting it for a total of $800.00 (including attatchements and shampooer).

Any thoughts??

The Oct. 2007 Consumer Reports ranked a Kirby 7th out or 43 upright vaccums tested, and they said its failure rate over four years was 4%, the lowest (but statistically insignificantly better than Bissel, Eureka, and Dirt Devil).

Anyone that spends $800 for a vacuum needs their head examined. You probably run the vacuum once a month like most people. Trust me, a $150 vacuum will give you the same results as your kirby. They must have been good salesmen. In a nutshell, you got pwned. nuff said

My previous vacuum cleaner was a Hoover windtunnel, I bought it because Consumer Reports had it rated as a best buy. It broke 3 times in two years I had it and didn't clean very well. Two seperate vacuum repair shops, had dozens of them in the store window for sell because they said so many people were unhappy with them and returned or traded them in for something else?...........I totally realize Kirbys are way more expensive than other cleaners, and perhaps I paid too much. However, I think there must be alternitive motives for Consumer Reports to have rated the Hoovers so high, when they fail so often?

But thanks for the feedback...

Should've gone with the 500 series Roomba ... awesome machine that does the work FOR you! And, you also would have had enough left over for some really nice dinners on the town

$800 seems cheap compared to what my sales person told me....$1200. I didn't buy it because that's crazy expensive for a vacuum, but it worked amazingly well. He poured talc powder on the carpet and rubbed it in so it got down between the fibers. He then had me vacuum the carpet with my Hoover, passing over the spot ~20 times. That should have been clean, right? Well, he passed the Kirby over the spot one time and the filter was covered with talc. Seemed like a very good vacuum, just expensive.

You should have bought a Rainbow. Much better then a Kirby.

And one day someone will be smart enough to put a filter in their machine and suck up the spot after the Kirby...guess what happens...oh, they offered to have you try that?, not...

thats kinda what I thought about the cost thing.......I've know several people that have paid over $1000 for them. Thats why I thought $800 was a deal. However, make no bones about it!!! It is crazy!!! to spend that much on a vacuum, even if it washes and folds your clothes. But thanks for the feedback....

About two months ago Kirby sales people were in our Neighborhood. I never heard of the company but I got the demo and their sales pitch.

They started their price around $1800. I wasn't in the market for a new vacuum so I said, NO. So the salesman started lowering price. I think first thing he offered was to buy my old vacuums for $100 each. So that price came down to 1600. I still said NO, so he kept going lower with the price. He threw in his employee discount and few extra bags and filter and whatever, I kept saying NO. I think he went down as low as $900.00. It might have been a slow month or whatever for the salesman, but I couldn't believe the price. The reason I didn't buy the vacuum at that price is because I didn't think it was worthed even at $900. The other main reason was that it just wasn't user friendly. There were too many things that you had to open, close, detach and attach.

Not that I wasn't impressed with the demo, but I wasn't in the market for new vacuum so I had to say NO. Like someone else mentioned, my family only vacuum about once in two weeks or so. So any decent vacuum should be good enough.

next time you are at a hotel or hospital --- check out what kind of vacuum the maid got on her cart --- chances are, that vacuum will last you a long time --- I doubt a Kirby is sitting there

Uncle Sam thanks you for helping the economy.

If they're really worth $1k+ or so, you wouldn't see them for $200 on eBay.

some kirby salesman came to my house too and did the whole demo and said it was $1200 and i said no so he lowered it to $1000. THEN I kept saying no over and over and he lowered it to only $650! We did not want to spend that much on a vacuum so I said no again and threatened to call the cops if he didn't leave.. Finally he left and he left his notebook there and inside wasa list of different customers who bought the kirby and the prices they bought it for. The prices ranged from $1200 to $450 ! I was so happy that I kept refusing to buy it..

High pressure sales tactics to sell a vacuum? Is this the 50's or what?
