Aftermarket (eBay) prices could go up for 1st gens if the new iPhones can't be jailbroken.

why, the only reason why they were hot because you couldnt get in any country, now its going to be available on over 30 countries, eBay resellers are scrwed
It won't belong after July 11th, someone will find the way to jail break the new iPhone 3G!b
I am betting they will fix the loophole in the activation method they have now.
With the first gen iphones you could walk into the ATT or Appl3 store and walk out with a new iphone and never activate it on ATT's network with a 2 year commitment. This made hacking them a VERY attractive option since you could pay the same for a contract phone or a no contract phone if you could do a cheap or free hack on them.
Try that with the latest TMO or VZW cell phone - you can't get out of the store with the phone for "cheap" without signing a contract. 2 yrs for the best price, 1 yr for a high price, and no contract meant full retail price.
If Appl3 is smart they will make buyers activate the phones before they leave the stores with them and if they will not sign a 2 year deal then they don't get a phone at that price or at all.
Then it will not matter if someone can hack the phone or not, if you have to pay $200 plus a $175 (or more) ETF to take it to TMO or out of contract most folks will not bother and just keep it under ATT contract. 3g will not work on TMO anyway we are told.

Apple's stratety changed?
8G new iPhone priced @ $199. How could Apple continue to sell
iPod Touch and other iPod(s)? iPod must be below $150.

If they require the contract to buy the phone and/or the phone is not hackable, then they can still sell the touch for more money. Why? Becuase the iphone would be $200 plus 24 months of service at $60 and up per month.

Hi. If so, short AAPL Stock. Thanks.
CNN hints that Apple allow wireless carriers to subside the cost of the iPhone through rebate (hopefully instant
) up to $200

I think the $200 price IS the subsidized price rather than the previous $400 price for the iphone.

hoping for the best...prepairing for the worst...
The day of buying iPhone AT&T and activate through iTunes is pretty much over. For the iPhone 1.0, Apple get some percentage from iPhone users's monthly bill. Now, instead it will get the money from AT&T up front @ time of purchase just like other cell phone makers. Now, AT&T will force you to sign a 2 year contract with data plan (which will increase fro $20 to $30/month.) The increase would total $240 before tax + fee after 2 years contract.
Now this is just AT&T, other carries from around the world would have to lock their users into similar deals to be able to subsidize your Apple 3G iPhone.
I guess I will sit on my iPhone for now.
I'm guessing Apple will clear out their stock of the current gen iPhones at a discount in the Apple online store.
I LOVE my iphone and I'm SO glad I got mine when I did.
I don't think I've ever admired and hated a company so much at the same time...
Wait, Microsoft comes to mind...but now I only hate them...
Viva la open architecture... C'mon Linux people, make it so non-techies like me can use it, too!
.
Hey, did anyone hear about the new iPhone? I wish someone would post a new thread about it about 15 times.

What? Is this for existing users? Source? I'm calling shenanigans on this one! Damn you AT&T!
