Can it play VOB files from external hard drives?
I have an old model of this machine (5937 or something). Though it did play VOB files (from a jump drive), playback is very choppy, which could be because of the USB 1.0 interface. With USB 2.0 on this one, I hope it can play VOB files smoothly from an external hard drive.
Thanks for any info.
Why are you messing with vob files? These are pretty much regulated to a dvd and if you're going to go thru the steps of decrypting a dvd then you may as well decrypt it to an avi. Vob files just arent your run of the mill file formats. And if the dvd isnt encrypted then why not just use the whole dvd anyway, its not like the rest of the files are going to add much miore to the entired enchilada.
Chill dude. Lot of people love to dump their DVDs on the hard drive for ease of use, or they might have downloaded those and want to play it from the ext. hdd.
Besides if you aren't familiar with conversions, then please understand the time saved and power saved by just dumping the DVD via DVDShrink (takes about 20-25mts on my quad-core) vs converting to divx format takes about 2hrs. Also the end result quality of DVD is way better than 1 pass divx conversion in 2hrs.
If i have about 30 different DVDs that my kids frequently use, i rather drop them on a 750GB ext. hdd (movie .vobs only) than convert everyone of them to .divx/.avi format, so they don't have to use/find the DVDs and switching a movie is very quickly and easily done via the dvd players remote. Again, why bother with vobs, if u have the dvd then play the dvd, if ur doing dvd shrink or decrypter then convert to avi or mpeg while decrypting or shrinking for that matter which saves space instead of using full size vobs which is one of the bennies of using a divx plyer. whatever ur doing with vobs can be done just as easily with xvid/divx plus ur savig space, so puh lease save ur rantings for those that dont know any better. dvdrhelp.com is the gospel on these matters. Youre preaching to the choir here, so dont tell me to chill, I know what Im talking about. If a lot of people wanna do the dump then thats their perogative, it just seems redundant to do so and they are the exception rather than the rule. BTW, if its taking u 2 hrs to convert on ur "quad core"(which is a dual core personafied) then you're doing something terribly wrong or ur multitaskin like an sob, either way it takes me about 20min for a normal 90 min dvd. 2 hours to convert on a quad core!! LMAO Rack him, Im out |

how does this compare to the dvp3960? obviously usb, but are there any other differences? i've had the 3960 for a while, and it's really loud, sounds like it's making the dvds itself. anyone owned both? |

I know this is getting a bit off topic, but how does one go about converting to avi or mpeg while decrypting a DVD? I've always used DVD Shrink to backup my DVDs to an external HD and the output of this process is VOB files. I don't see a DVD Shrink option to change the output to avi. If someone can point me to an article on how to do this (hopefully, it's easy and simple to do), I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. |

Here is a _compare_ from Philips: http://www.consumer.Philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_categoryid_DVD_AND_HOME_THEATER_CA_US_CONSUMER/#;filterStates=%5BFK_BLURAY_DISC_PLAYER%3Btrue%5D%5BFK_PLAYER%3Btrue%5D%5BFK_RECORDERS_RECORD_PLAYERS%3Btrue%5D%5BFK_VCR_VCR_COMBI%3Btrue%5D%5BFK_HIGH_DEFINITION_HOME_THEA%3Bfalse%5D%5BFK_BLURAY_DISC_PLAYBACK%3Bfalse%5D%5BFK_USB_DVD_HOME_THEATER%3Bfalse%5D%5BFK_HDMI_DVD_HOME_THEATER%3Bfalse%5D%5BFK_I_LINK%3Bfalse%5D%5BFK_PAUSE_LIVE_TV%3Bfalse%5D%5BFK_PORTABLE_DVD_PLAYERS_REC%3Bfalse%5D%5BFK_DVB_T_DVD_HOME_THEATER%3Bfalse%5D%5BFK_ANALOG_DVD_HOME_THEATER%3Bfalse%5D%5Bid1%3BDVP5990%2F37%5D%5Bid2%3BDVP5992%2F37%5D%5Bcompare%3Btrue%5D According to it 5992 is missing "Direct USB" as well as 12-bit/108MHz video DAC. At the same time it (5992) seem to have that 12-bit/108MHz video DAC here http://www.consumer.Philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5992_37_US_CONSUMER/DVD-Player-with-USB+DVP5992-37 $40 is a great price in any case Thanks, OP |

Try ripping with DVDFab HD Decrypter, then run it through AutoGK or.. Xilisoft DVD to DivX Converter 4 which is easier but costs $$$ unless you know... uhmm, yea Ill leave it at that. |

For the FW members who have this already, is there any news on whether it can play VOB files over USB. And for the sake of argument, we each have our own preferences on how we would like to store our files. I like to store them on VOB format rather than having the disk. Lets keep this topic on track with the DVD player itself. |

I noticed in the manual for the 5992, that it will rip CDs to the USB port in MP3 format. Now that's something new! It makes me wonder if, since it can write music to the USB port, could it be hacked to write DVDs??? |

Maybe OT again, one thing I miss on the 'borrowed' DivX avi files is the ability forward to next chapter and menus etc. Is there any free tools out there whoch are able to preserve the chapters / menus etc. |

Thanks, OP Manual is the same for the two different model numbers... I think it's likely that 5992 is a firmware update on 5990... Manual |

All of my download movies are in iso format. Can it be played with this player? If not, is there any player out there that has usb hook up to external hard drive, and play iso format? Thank you for the advise. |
