vleek said:I don't know any software player which may playback ISO. It's not a movie format, it's a CD/DVD image format. On PC you may install some program like DeamonTools, after that it will be viewed as drive. But no hardware standalone players can playback ISO from USB.

VLC (Videolan) is a freeware software player that handles ISOs.

According to it 5992 is missing "Direct USB" as well as 12-bit/108MHz video DAC. At the same time it (5992) seem to have that 12-bit/108MHz video DAC here
http://www.consumer.Philips.com/consumer/en/us/~~~~~

$40 is a great price in any case

Thanks, OP

Manual is the same for the two different model numbers... I think it's likely that 5992 is a firmware update on 5990...

Manual

Can someone please check and post the firmware version of the DVP5992 from Costco?
You can do this by hitting the following button sequences on the remote: Setup, 1, 3, 8, 9

The latest 5990 firmware on the Philips web site is "37.08.51.27".

The 5992 I just picked up today has fw 37.08.51.25

I have the old 5960 and 5982. I can confirm so far that high bitrate mpg files that studdered on my 5960 and occasionally on the 5982 play smoothly on the 5992. I also plugged a non-powered generic 2.5" enclosure and my fat32 format hard drive was recognized and accessible. My other ntfs external non-powered drive was not accessible. The 5992 powered off appears to power the usb port. The Costco item # listed above is confirmed. Remote control is definitely more responsive than the older units. FF and RR also p'wns the old units. FYI...this Costco unit does NOT include the HDMI cable as they had in the past.

Can it play VOB files from external hard drives?

I have an old model of this machine (5937 or something). Though it did play VOB files (from a jump drive), playback is very choppy, which could be because of the USB 1.0 interface. With USB 2.0 on this one, I hope it can play VOB files smoothly from an external hard drive.

Thanks for any info.

Why are you messing with vob files? These are pretty much regulated to a dvd and if you're going to go thru the steps of decrypting a dvd then you may as well decrypt it to an avi.
Vob files just arent your run of the mill file formats.
And if the dvd isnt encrypted then why not just use the whole dvd anyway, its not like the rest of the files are going to add much miore to the entired enchilada.

Because, oh ye of massive cluelessness, he can string together one vob set after another for continuous play up to the capacity of his flash or hard drive.

Does anyone know if playing VOBs from an external drive outputs Dolby Digital as well as subtitles if needed?

Is there any free tools out there whoch are able to preserve the chapters / menus etc.

Is anyone able top help answer the question ?

After reading this thread, I'm still not sure of the differences between the 5990 and then 5992. Can someone give a quick summary of the difference? and which one is a better player? Thanks.
