Are you nuts???? That price is Flippn' insane. You can buy 3, 1 year old minty condition Chevy Impalas with E85 FlexFuel capability for that price.

Remember, this is fatwallet, not blingtieclip.

Or you could buy one 3-year old Camry and pay the gas for 5 years at that price.

I am a car dealer and I would love to sell this car to you at the price you have quoted.

If this price is too high, what else should I get? I average 425 miles a week, 75% highway and 25% traffic...i need a car to look nice since i am in real estate and gets good gas mileage.

First of all, if your negotiation on a $35k car only saves you $1050, you need to learn how to negotiate. There's a nice starter thread you can find in here about how to buy a new car.

As far as makes/models, that's personal preference. Check Consumer Reports for gas mileage and reliability ratings (although don't go on CR alone), and find something that fits your needs.

I'll beat that price by $50! And I'll throw in a free iPod nano!

Not to beat a dead horse, but I just went on Edmunds, added every single option I could to the Camry hybrid, and the MSRP only gets to $32,165. That dealer must be calling you constantly, begging you to come back in.

Go here. Look at the costs.

Get a new Accord for $20k instead. Or a regular Camry.

Do you really need the iPod kit? I thought the Gen 6 Camry comes with AUX in...?

I have called all 30 plus dealerships in the Bay Area and the best deal I received was $1200 off MSRP but it wasnt the color I wanted. I do not know about the rest of the country, but dealerships are still charging premiums on any hybrids. Going with programs like Costco and AAA have no impact on dealerships. The arrogance of sales managers is overbearing at times. All I am looking for is a magnetic grey with ash leather with navi for the toyota hybrid which should cost below $30K, but with the demand, can't seem to find one. All the other accessories I can do without...any help...I am willing to travel to southern California to pick up the car as well...

Buy a 4 cylinder Camry. You can pay for alot of gas with the money that you saved at purchase.

But what if it isn't the right color?!

I think we found the reason all dealers want to charge extra, if color is a deciding factor.

The OP has made up his mind and is looking for a validation of his decision. I think we should support the OP so that there is one less hungry car salesman.

Go to www.Edmunds.com and see their top 10 cheapest cars to own analysis.

They're mostly small cars (Corollas, Civics, etc.)

The Hyundai has been getting rave reviews and has a great warranty (best around). I rented a Sonata and thought I was in an Accord!

I'd look at those and a 4-cyl regular Camry is nice, too. I had one of those as a rental (last model) and drove 10 boxes of books (400 lbs) from Nashville to Pittsburgh and got ~38 mpg driving at ~74 mph for the trip. I was really impressed.

I drive Toyotas and have had no problems (celicas, PU, prius, Tacoma now) and I'm taking a serious look at Hyundai because of the build and warranty (they're nipping at Toyota/Honda's heels!)...

Good luck, but do check out the calculator at http://www.edmunds.com/.

Also, I paid an extra $4,500 for my loaded Prius over the base model because I wanted the NAV so badly. My brother visited last week with his Garmin Nuvi (~$200) and it was great! So don't let built in NAV drive your decision--it will cost you dearly.

Furthermore, taking the dealer's upgraded radio is a HORRIBLE decision. Aftermarket is sooooo much cheaper and more bang for your buck.

If you can get a package with safety features only, take it and add the bells and whistles aftermarket, imho.

Because you do so much highway driving, you should consider a 'regular' Camry - even a V6 should net you close to 30 MPG highway. You already know that hybrids are selling at or above MSRP, so why not look elsewhere?

In your case, you're looking for something that will make a good impression on clients. How about an '08 (should be cheaper as the '09s are in) Camry XLE I4 w/ leather and navigation? Or even a used ES350..

All kidding aside, being in your business is a good reason to have a nice car as you show clients around. But also keep in mind that you don't want to crank up the "bling" too much. With the housing market the way it is, you don't want to give a prospective buyer the feeling that you are rolling in the dough!

Seriously consider the 4 cylinder Camry - it's a "smart money" investment. The premium people are paying for hybrid just isn't calculating out to be a smart way to go these days.

And in all seriousness do give an Impala a test drive. Thanks to the heat from Toyota, GM has done wonders to that car and it's twins. Both V6 engines return 30+ MPG on the highway, and the smaller one (still over 200 HP mind you) runs on cheaper E85 fuel. Only downsides are a fluffy-soft ride that looses some agility in the balance, and heavier depreciation than with the Toyota.

In addition to the 4cyl Camry, you also might want to check out Saturn Aura/Chevy Malibu and Hyundai Sonata/Kia Optima. All 4 are great cars and will return excellent mileage and more than enough power with the 4 cyl models.
