while Amazon loses money on the 30 day PM, it gains customer's willingness to buy by offering protection against price fluctuation. by taking this away, customers have an incentive to more thoroughly compare prices, knowing that an adjustment is no longer possible. Hence, they lose customers. While it may boost short term profits, its poor strategy to have your customers look elsewhere.

I love costco as a retailer but if they decided to eliminate their lax return policy which is also a PM policy, i simply wont shop there. Almost all the top retailers have decent return policies. Without one, the general consumer will come in, look at an item.. think long and hard if they really need it, if its a good deal, then leave without it.

Both Costco and REI are terrible for my wallet.. I walk through the store, if something catches my eye, more often than not, i leave with it.

I was told about this yesterday when I tried for a price adjustment and I received the official Amazon response today via email:

Hello from Amazon.com.

Thanks for writing to us asking about post-order price policies for items purchased from Amazon.com.

While we don't always beat the best available price on every product, we do offer deep discounts on many thousands of items and cannot offer discounts after your order is complete.

I hope you will understand our limitations in this regard.

From time to time, prices on some items will change due to special offers from suppliers and manufacturers or our inventory and sales volumes. When we can offer a lower price for new purchases, we will.

Exactly X 2. When you shop locally you give all kinds of local jobs (the truckers, distribution center and local store clerks to managers on up). How may people in your city make their living from Amazon or Buy.com?

This came as a real shock to me. So sad, really.

First Try, by Phone:

Thank you for contacting Amazon.com This is only regards to inform you: Only orders placed before September 1, 2008 are eligible for a price difference refund under the Post-Order Price Guarantee policy. As of September 1, 2008 we are no longer offering discounts if prices change on our website after you make a purchase.

Second try, by email:

Thank you for contacting us to take advantage of our Post-Order Price Guarantee. I have reviewed our previous correspondence with you, and I offer my sincere apologies for any misunderstanding thus far I've confirmed that we now offer a greater discount on "<product name>" than at the time you placed your order. However please understand that as of September 01, 2008 we are no longer offering discounts if prices change on our website after you make a purchase. Please note that only orders placed before September 01, 2008 are eligible for a price difference refund under the Post-Order Price Guarantee policy. I am sorry if this information disappoints you. Hence as you have placed this order after on September 09, 2008, we will not be able to apply this Post-Order Price Guarantee for this order. Again, I would like to apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced and express our gratitude for the patience you've displayed thus far. If you prefer, you may return the item within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Just visit our online Returns Center, which will guide you through the process and even give you a printable return mailing label:

I just called this morning and was given a price adjustment for some Kenneth Cole shoes that hadn't shipped yet but were in the "shipping soon" status. I called again this afternoon for a price adjustment and they declined that since it already shipped and arrived a couple days ago.

Tell Amazon to keep its Post-Order Price Guarantee!

I just experienced this today with Amazon and was not happy at all with Amazon. I just found out that this issue has been covered on the deal discussion. It is 1116 total signatures as of today. How many more we need to make Amazon put their policy back?

alert mods

A LOT more than the current 1100.....say maybe half a million more.

same problem here. Does any one know whether other stores (CC, BBY) start doing the same thing? personally I think it is wrong business decision

As long as people still buy from them, there is no reason for them to change their policy back. The thing is probably only FWers are taking huge advantage of this price match and they are losing profits from those that took advantage of this. There are a lot other online shopping out there that don't even know about this policy and still buy stuff from Amazon.
Ask yourself, if you really need certain item as soon as possible and you notice Amazon has pretty good price, could you NOT shop at Amazon because their price guarantee policy change? I think as long as Amazon offer pretty good price, people will still shop there.

There is a difference. If I really need a product, without much thinking I used to buy from Amazon (though current price is little high, I hope to get adjusted if/when the price come down.). 50% of the times, I paid little more than average prices in the market.

But now I will shop around for the better price and buy when i find the cheaper price. Now I buy from them only when the price is cheapest.

What is more troubling is that they don't seem to be honoring their preorder price guarantee. (see below). I had preordered Kung Fu Panda on blu-ray at $28 and the price is now $23. I have not received the disc yet. I called to try to get a $5 refund. After being put on hold on numerous occasions and a demand to go through a supervisor, I finally got them to refund the $5. During this time they scolded me to say that this is will be marked on my account as a 1 time exception. I told them that their policy is to automatically lower the price when there is a price drop on a preorder. I can't believe that the call took 40 minutes. They really didn't seem to care that I have been a loyal customer for years and that this price change request is different then the post order price guarantee. On top of it all, it was extremely difficult to understand the customer service rep on the other end.

Not that it matters to Amazon, but I for one will not be ordering from them any more unless it is a deal that I just can't pass up. For those of you out there, who preorder items from Amazon, be careful as Amazon seems to believe that the preorder price guarantee is gone as well. I'm going to look for alternative places on the web. Maybe Buy.com, Newegg, etc. Any suggestions?

Pre-Order Price Guarantee

Amazon.com's price for not-yet-released items sometimes changes between the time the item is listed for sale and the time it is released and shipped. Whenever you pre-order a book, CD, video, DVD, video game, or software item, the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you place your order and the release date. The order summary in Your Account will reflect the lowest price within 24 hours of the price change.

Please note that our Pre-Order Price Guarantee applies only to items sold by Amazon.com, and not to items (or prices) offered by other sellers on our site.

If your order enters the shipping process before the release date and the price is lowered on the release date, we will automatically refund your credit card for the difference between the price you were charged and the release-date price. If you did not use a credit card to pay for your order, please contact customer service through the Contact Us box on the right side of any Help page.

Even during Christmas season, the post-order price guarantee is still dead. Got my notice after I requested one (hey, it doesn't hurt to try!)

alert mods

Most retailers still offer price adjustments - usually within 14 days with just the receipt and within 90 returning the actual product.

Last Christmas 99% of my gifts were purchased from Amazon because of their price policy. Amazon realizes that most people will not go through the hassle of sending the items back just because the price has dropped.

I purchased an item, the price dropped $17 the next day and when I was refused the adjustment- I felt as though I was taken advantage of.

Did you return it?

Item came in multiple oversized large packages - it would have cost more to send it back - so I will keep it and "eat" the price difference!

alert mods

I have stuff in my shopping cart, and every time I click on it, they tell me every single one of those items' price changed. up $10, down $5, down 32

alert mods

another insulting thing is that they have advertised some toys as "the lowest price of the season"

see at the bottom of the items price
http://www.Amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002AUWKG/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance

but guess what, the prices drop a few days later. i called them and their rep tried to tell me that it means its the lowest price of the season "at that time", and that it does not mean the price can drop further, what the heck!!! add this to them stopping the 30 day price match and it is a very frustrating scenario

i wrote them a letter stating my concerns and hoping that they are not sacrificing their loyal customers to make a buck. lets help bring back the 30 day price gaurantee

alert mods

I bought 2 pairs of Unlisted shoes that were 23.99 and about 4 hours later the price dropped to 15.99 and they would not price adjust. At this point I think I am done with Amazon I used to love this store but not anymore with there crazing pricing up down.
