I've cleaned houses for 20 years and have tips and money saving ideas that might help. Let me know what you need to clean and I'll try to help. I can usually tell you what cleaners work best on most surfaces. I just thought that I'd like to give back to the fatwallet community. Feel free to send me a message and I'll get back to it as soon as I can. Have a great day.
Trish

Please feel free to leave any cleaning tip that you may have. We all could use some help sometimes.

THERE ARE MORE SOLUTIONS THROUGHOUT THE LISTINGS. I'VE JUST PUT SOME HERE IN "Q & A" FORM. IF YOU KNOW OF ANY TIPS OR SOLUTIONS, OR IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE POST THEM AND THEY WILL BE ANSWERED AND THEN LISTED HERE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THANKS!!!

Q: Any good method of getting cat hair off of fabric couches? I have been using the lint rollers made of sticky paper, but I go through them pretty quick.

A: Try a very lightly damp cloth and rub in one direction. That will pull the hair into a clump that you can then pick off.

Q: What about dog smell on carpets?

A: I have found that vinegar is the absolute best deodorizer. A very light solution of vinegar water in your carpet shampooer and then shampoo as you would normally do with shampoo to leave a fresh clean scent.

Q: How do you get cat pee smell out of shoes, or canvas purses?

A: The only deodorizer I use for animal smells is vinegar. Wash in a light vinegar and water solution and then wash as you normally would.

Q: what's the best method to clean hard water deposits from aluminum shower frames? most of the chemicals (CLR, lime away, etc.) say to not use on aluminum, and kabloom and other chemicals don't seem to work effectively unless you scrub pretty hard. thanks.

A: ok, here's my biggest secret. I use a car cleaner. Yep, one that cleans cars without water. Right now I'm using a product that's close to the same thing as rain-X. It's called FW1. You can get some at www.fastwax.com. Try it out and use it on your glass shower doors too. Then when you clean them you will only need a dry soft cloth.

Q: What is the best product for cleaning the grout around bathtub and in-between tiles?

A: To get rid of the icky black mold use tilex. Mold is alive and the bleach in tilex will kill it. Bleach is the only thing that will kill it. Also leave your shower curtain or shower doors open. The water being trapped in there being unable to dry is what causes mold. Hope that helps.

Q: I have white marble floor in my kitchen (I know I know, cus we don't cook). It gets very dusty. We have applied a layer of sealant right after installation so it does help somewhat. But sometimes spills do happen from the fridge to the family room. What I want to know is what are the best cleaning agent(s) to use for marbles and granites (my countertops). Most cleaner has an exclusion on these two material.

A: Ah, this is my specialty! For the marble floor use a tablespoon of white vinegar to one gallon of water and mop or hands and knees your floor. It shines beautifully!! The marble counters is super easy. A capful of murphy's oil soap in a 1/4 sink of hot water. Wipe your counters and dry them as you go. Again, they will be gorgeous. I promise!

Q: To clean your MICROWAVE easier and faster.

A: remove the plate and spray with your favorite cleaner (409, Fantastic, even windex if that's all you have in a spray bottle), close the door and wait 10 - 15 minutes. Everything should wipe off really easily. If your kids are like mine and never cover food before heating, you may need to repeat this process. Just do what I do, spray the microwave and wipe your counters. Then go back to wipe out the microwave, if it needs more cleaning just spray again and clean some more of the kitchen and go back to wipe out the rest. It really cuts your cleaning time down to get in the habit of spraying.

Q: KITCHEN CABINETS looking icky?

A: Don't just cover them with furniture polish, use a solution of 1:100 of murphy's oil soap in hot water. Wash your cabinets to get the "goop" off instead of just covering the dust, fingerprints, food, etc. over with layers of furniture polish. This works great on all types of cabinets that I've come across.

Q: How do you clean stainless steel when there is a yellow/brown colored spot from cooking hot oily foods?

A: You need to buy some "cameo". I've only found it online. Make a paste and rub onto discolored stain in a circular motion with a very soft cloth. It will not scratch your stainless steel and will leave it looking new!

Q: How do you get the grease off of the filters from a stove/range hood? I know that leaving them greasy can cause kitchen fires.

A: Once again I suggest that you use Super Clean from WalMart. It's in a big purple, gallon jug, that only costs about $5.00, and it's in the automotive department. Dilute it very well in a full sink of very hot water. They grease just falls off. Use gloves when handling Super Clean because it's very strong. Rinse your filter well, let it dry and there you go.

Q: How would I continue to remove dog smell from carpets and furniture?

A: I used a white vinegar and water solution in my rug shampooer and kept going over the carpets repeatedly. Only use about 2-4 tablespoons of white vinegar per gallon of water. After shampooing a few times like this, I shampooed again with my regular rug shampoo. Hope it works for you too.

Q: what is the strongest cleaner for getting minerals off of a shower enclosure? Blue stains, white film. on a blue enclosure, very old. Well water is the issue. Commercial items on the store shelf are useless. Bam, Lime Away, CLR, just don;t cut it.

A: Try using a mr clean sponge. I can't think of the name of them right now, but they are the white ones that disintegrate as you use them. Magic sponge or something like that. I've also used FW1 Racing Formula car cleaner. You can get this by visiting www.fastwax.com. I was driving home and someone was selling it on the side of the road. I like trying new things and I just figured I'd try it on the bottom of the tiles that we were replacing. Long story short, I'm no longer replacing the tiles, they look great now. This works on porcelain tiles that I know of, I've not tried it on any others. Good luck and let me know how it works out for you.

Q: Any suggestion on mold on caulk? I have changed my caulk every year in the shower. I have used every kind of caulk (silicone, anti mold) and still have mold problem every year. The caulk doesn't last either. Have to literally change every year. First 2 years was okay to replace but its getting to be a chore every year. Any tips cleaning. I have wipe the caulk after using the shower. thanks

A. Use tilex mold/mildew remover. Only bleach will kill mold and this works very well. Remember to always leave your shower curtain or doors open after showering to air dry the area. The moisture is what causes the mold in the first place. I have a small fan in my bathroom that helps to dry the shower and now I no longer get mold. Hope that helps!

Q: How about Jacuzzi, especically the mold inside the jets? Those are so difficult to clean!

A: Fill your Jacuzzi up with cold water until the level is well above the Jacuzzi jets. Turn on the Jacuzzi and make sure the water in the Jacuzzi is not being thrown out beyond the Jacuzzi. If so, adding more water will usually correct the problem. Once you are satisfied the water is not splashing outside the Jacuzzi add 4 cups of Clorox or any non-concentrated bleach to the water while the jets are still running being CAREFUL not to let any splash on you and let your Jacuzzi run for at least 15 minutes. (If you don't fell comfortable pouring bleach into the rapidly moving water then turn off the Jacuzzi, add the bleach and then turn on the Jacuzzi once the bleach has diluted in the water.) This will not only clean the mold inside the jets but it will also remove ALL mold in the Jacuzzi jet system. You will be totally shocked when you see what comes out after the Clorox starts working! If you have not done it before the water may become black with all the bacteria the Clorox has dissolved Once you are satisfied the system is clean simply drain the Jacuzzi and let all that gunk go down the drain. You may have to repeat the process if the Jacuzzi jet system is really dirty. This process will NOT hurt your Jacuzzi so you can do it as often as you like. You can also buy commercial products specifically designed to do the same thing but they are 99% bleach and cost as much as $30 for a small 1 pint bottle so save your money. I find that generic bleach from the local dollar store works best.

fyi: Cold water works best with bleach. Bleach is not as powerful in hot or warm water.

FYI: I found yet another use for Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. If there are still brown burnt on spots on the sides of the oven doors after using the self cleaning selection on your oven, rub your magic eraser on it and poof - gone!

FYI: Do you have black crud on the bottom of your pots and pans? Use steel wool and it should come right off.

Q: How do you clean the corners? Kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, the decorative recesses on the inside doors -- anywhere there is a raised surface/trim, the corners collect dust, talcum powder, etc. The only thing I can figure out is to get a huge amount of Q-Tips (or their generic equivalent) and pick at the stuff.

A: I'd try a soft bristled toothbrush and some murphy's oil soap diluted in warm water.

I just made a $100 bet with a new client. I bet that I could clean all of her floors, using only 1 product, and have them come out better than all of her 11 products that she used.

I won! I used a splash of vinegar on her wood, tile, ceramic and porcelain floors and they all sparkled! She handed me a crisp $100 bill and she is now a permanent client with me! Vinegar people, seriously.

Q: Red dye stains in carpet (kool-aid, yogurt, etc)

A: Try "Spot Shot" from almost any home improvement store. For the kool-aid you might need to use it a couple of times, but it worked for me.

Q: Cat hair on furniture?

A: I've just tried the handheld "Shark" vacuum (it's blue) and it's super powerful and did an awesome job. It costs about $50 and you have to dump the dust cup often and be sure to watch the filters. I clean my filters by taking it outside and smacking it to loosen the fine dust particles that clog it.

Q: If you have outdoor toys (plastic ones like 'Little Tykes') that need to be refreshed before the kids can use them this Spring?

A: Generously apply scrubbing bubbles and lightly use a scrub brush, rinse with a hose and those toys will come out looking great!

OT: How you recommend someone find and select an occasional house cleaner? (for about once per week).

BrianGa- I know the answer to your question! Take a facecloth and dampen it. Use the facecloth to swipe in one direction- pull off the hair, use it in the opposite direction - pull off the hair. if you have one of those microfiber cloths it works even better. No need to buy those sticky rollers unless you need your clothes swiped off just before you go out the door. PS. Take your cat outside and comb her hair "against the grain" and let the fur fly into the wind. I swear I get a grocery sack of hair off of one of mine- the other one very little. HTHS

Try white vinegar. Make sure it's white vinegar.

New carpet. You don't want the bacteria that is now present in it taking hold.

UrineOff. It's a great product.

If I didn't have 4 long haired cats I wouldn't need a housecleaner but I found a lint brush, the kind w/ sort of a velvet-y nap works ok. Sticky lint rollers are too $$$. Packing tape is cheaper. I pull the labels off of packages and use them on my clothes (how's that for cheap?).

BradMajors said:OT: How you recommend someone find and select an occasional house cleaner? (for about once per week).Ask a friend or neighbor for recommendations. Don't just call someone blindly. If you haven't had a house cleaner before, make sure you make a list of what's important to you.

Use water softener - mix 1/4 cup with 1 Gal of HOT water. That will do wonders. Also, same solution is great to clean grease off of Kitchen range hood/microwave filters. For that, fill up the kitchen sink with hot water and add 1/2 cup of softener and then soak the filters. Grease will magically come off in 10-15 minutes.

Use tilex or if you want to go on the cheap, try 1 part Chlorine (chlorox or generic) bleach and 5 parts water in a spray bottle. Spray directly and let stand for 20 minutes. Repeat once if necessary and then rinse with plain cold water. The problem with bleach is the smell and fumes so you may want to run the exhaust (if you have one) or open a window in the bathroom.

i have colored grout and off-white grout so i didn't want to use tilex or chlorine. i've tried edfred and other chemicals. i surfed the net and tried the suggestions such as steaming (i have a commercial wallpaper steamer and tried it), and scrubbing with an oxiclean paste, but surprisingly, i found that soaking the grout with kabloom for 20 mins then scrubbing with a brush restored the color of the grout. now i need to reseal my grout to keep it looking clean.

I'm going to try this. In the past, I've made a paste of oxiclean and end up going through about 2 dozen toothbrushes cleaning the grout in my kitchen. Between spilled coffee and spaghetti sauce, the white grout on the floor (don't even ASK what I was thinking when I thought it was nice when we bought the house), the grout gets discolored easily. I think I have tilex too. Might spray some in one section tonight and see how it goes.
