It is amazing to me how people do fail to read the fine print and then when it affects them adversly they fail to recognize any accountability on their part. Look at car tabs, if I fail to renew my tabs when they are due I don't get an extension when I do go in. The DMV tells me sorry and next time I should renew them when they are due. Costco sends out renewal notices to advise you that your renewal is due. You choose to ignore it and renew when you come back in. How does that work if you join a gym. Can you just pay for the times you go and workout? No you have to pay every month whether you go or not. Things that are outlined in the FINE PRINT. Maybe if people were more responsible for their actions and read the details prior to agreeing to such a commitment there wouldn't be so many problems. That would require responsibility and accountability on their part and as lawyers have shown us we don't have to be responsible for our actions anymore. Just remember next time you get your cup of coffee from your local coffee shop, it is hot! Forget the fact it is coffee and most times supposed to be hot, nope a lawyer made sure we were reminded of that. Common sense and personal responsibility are no longer necessary. Of course that is just my opinion, I could be wrong. |

Of course that is just my opinion, I could be wrong. Agreed. In this Costco case, nothing was hidden and the plaintiff(s) could simply have chosen not to renew or to get a refund. But 'fine print' should not be permitted to be in substantially smaller print and substantially contradictory to a main point. Consumer Protection laws are a reasonable way of dealing with this. See previous in this thread, for example, what the AG of NY did regarding AV SW companies. |

I told my husband a long time ago that this was illegal and now I'm correct. We've had our membership for 3 years so I technically be should be rewarded 3 times however months I was shorted per year. So, for me it is always 2-3 months times 3 which is 6 months minimum free membership. I think that the lawyers should go for settlement plus no upcharge on merchandise for that whole free membership period. Thanks a million lawyers. Gwen |

If Rhonda Dupler, and others, paid their renewal on time; they would not be confronted with this "problem". They could have shopped for those missing months that they feel they are being denied. What attorney was desperate enough to take this case? I want nothing to do with it. Get a life, Rhonda. There are bigger issues in life than this. MJC |

Stop resurrecting this thread unless you're claiming or not claiming and wish to report. Kind of obnoxious to see it around with no real updates haha. |

Did you know that AAA of Southern California behaves in exactly the same way, namely if you renew after your expiration date, AAA continues to use your original expiration date rather than the date that you actually renew, which essentially robs you of services for that time period. I will be looking for the law office that handled Costco to see if they operate here in California. I'd be willing to wager that AAA all across the country has been doing this for years. |

Ha, this happened to me with 2 magazines. I paid for a 1yr and got the 12 issues. Well I canceled the autp renewal and got billed for it. This went to collections within 3 months. 4 months and no magazine rec'd since last paid issue. I finally decided to start the subscription up again for 12 issues. I was billed for a year but only recieved 7 issues. It happens all the time. |

I had the same issue with AAA. I signed up for the 3-month trial for $10. It ended in November, 2006. In February, 2007 I signed up for a new membership. My cards arrived with an expiration date of November, 2008 after having PIF for that membership on 2/3/2007. |

Costco sucks! I used to have a membership but switched to Sam's Club only to realize it was infiltrated by bigots. I went back to Costco recently(less than a week) and I am already in the process of canceling my membership and getting a full refund. Their employees have disgusting attitudes and Costco.com is totally inept at delivering anything larger than loaf of bread. |

I live in a state with license tabs, if I forget to renew license tabs one of my cars (really easy cause I have 9) the cops see $$ and when I renew it is from when it is expired. if my tabs expired in june and I renew them in feb, then the tabs are only good until june, how is this any different ? disclosure, I am a original member at costco, and remember when the first starbucks opened. |

disclosure, I am a original member at costco, and remember when the first starbucks opened. ... i am guessing because it costs less to continue a registration than get a new one .... you may still have the right to cancel and obtain a new reg ..... |
