I've become a big fan of Woot.com's bag of crap (and a similar deal I found on Graveyard Mall). It's not offered very often, and my friends and I are hoping to meet some people in the Baltimore area who would like to start a group that puts together and swaps boxes of stuff. Think you are talking about geocaching, but really isnt the same thing as the OP is talking about.
