So Cal here: 2009 Toyota Corolla S. $4500 CARS + $2000 rebate + $500 loyalty cash. $12,500 OTD

Have you researched this at all? You'd need a clunker rated at 11-13 mpg to get $4500 back on most of those.

Almost every older SUV qualifies.

And in a lot of those cases these SUVs are worth $4500+. Going with an SUV to subcompact downgrade might mean having to get rid of the boat, camper, etc. as well.

Does anyone know anything about the new program put together by the major car dealers (now that the government one is in question)?

timschramm said: Does anyone know anything about the new program put together by the major car dealers (now that the government one is in question)?

The government just infused 2 BILLION in the Cash for Clunkers program. It is still going strong.

Ahnold said: Have you researched this at all? You'd need a clunker rated at 11-13 mpg to get $4500 back on most of those.

Actually it is an average of 18MPG rating. You must be doing your research on a Commodore64. Maybe you need a cash for clunker computer program?
from www.cars.gov...
"Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)"

I wish I could UPGRADE to some of the "clunkers" I have seen on tv. A lot of them are nicer than my car which doesn't qualify.

A 98 Grand Marquis at 18 mpg qualifies for 9 Ford @ $4500 and 10 @ $3500
As does a 95, I got both.....

Remember too, that you're eligible for at least the salvage value of your "clunker" in addition to the $4500 government subsidy money.

I have 1997 Honda Accord - wrecked front hood and bumper damaged. Is this car qualified? It does gives 32 MPG.

C320 said: Here is another cheap one

I think that military college students with a clunker to trade-in and who are current Hyundai "lease loyalty" customers (to get the advertised $1999 price) are quite a bit of a minority.

My mother's 1999 Blazer qualified for the 4500. She just got a 2009 Jeep Patriot 2.4 MSRP $18740 for $11,000 tax, tag, title, everything included in the $11,000.

sardarji said: I have 1997 Honda Accord - wrecked front hood and bumper damaged. Is this car qualified? It does gives 32 MPG.

No, the car must be 18 MPG or lower (with the exception of some trucks/vans). The only way that your car could qualify is *possibly* if it had a V6. see linky

If you use this link http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/CarsSelectYear1.jsp, you can determine which vehicle qualifies and which does not. Apparently, the VW Routan does not qualify.

LOL, My neighbor wanted to trade in a 2006 SUV valued at $12,000+ and couldn't understand that all he'd get is $4500 **OR** the trade in value but not both. He thought you were "trading in" the vehicle and got the trade-in value PLUS the clunker rebate. I tried to explain to him that what you turn in has to be demolished for scrap to get it off the road. Duhhhh

She is VERY lucky as I spent all day working the phone and laptop trying to find one from Springfield, IL to Marion, IL to St. Louis, MO, to Danville, Il, to LaSalle, IL, to Davenport, IA to....

And never found a Patriot or Compass and very few Calibers...

And thank you for the info on salvage as I did not know that!

"The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate."

can you buy a salvage car and trade in to dealer to get Clunkers $4500 off a new vehicle ?

cuchuoi said: can you buy a salvage car and trade in to dealer to get Clunkers $4500 off a new vehicle ? No, it has to have been titled and insured in your name for the past year.

Wasn't it just a few years ago Congress was subsidizing the purchase of these clunkers when they passed the law where you could buy a hummer and depreciate all of it in one year as long as it was a "business expense." So we subsidized these crap cars on the way out of GM and now we subsidize them on the way out to the scrap heap. Utterly short sited at every turn. And we want these same people to design our healthcare system?

You have to show you have owned the car for a year to qualify. Unfortunately, this limits the FW'er side of me. I would like a piece of this, considering I'm subsidizing the idiots who bought these cars and can't afford them anymore. I would be trolling CL for any piece of crap I could trade in.

Huh?
I am sure they are upside down more that $4500

Another "deal" is the only BMW that qualifies for the program, the BMW 335d - diesel. If your car qualifies for the $4500 fed credit, BMW will give you another $4500 "Eco Credit" PLUS you get a $900 Tax CREDIT! That's basically $10K off, before any negotiations! Of course, the base price of this car is $43K. Still, $10K off is over 20% discount. Not too bad.

One caveat, the BMW 335d *only* comes with an auto transmission, not exactly BMW's strong point. Good Luck!

How much money have people been getting for the scrap value of their "clunkers"?

I just cashed in my 1994 Lexus SC300 and the dealer got $50 for the scrap value but I didn't get anything. I know some lady got $150 for her Toyota Previa, so I just wanted to see if I got screwed out of $100 or so. I know it may not seem like a lot, but $100 is still $100. Hopefully fellow FWers understand. Fridge full of beer, 4 tanks of gas in a new Corolla, etc. It would've been nice.

cjthelegend said: Is the qualification cut and dry by whats listed on the cars.org website or do they measure the combined gas mileage at the dealership? My car listed new is about 21 combined mileage but that is forsure not the case now.
-Fueleconomy.gov provides the official fuel mileage ratings used for c4c. They're judging clunkers by gas mileage according to new epa method, not the old one that posted on your car when you bought it new many years ago. If I deduced correctly, you have the 97 Camry V6 Automatic, right? That's the least fuel efficient Camry made that year, and fueleconomy.gov says it gets 19MPG combined with the new ratings, 21 combined with the old ratings. Sorry man you got burned by 1 MPG.

Just out of curiosity, how many miles does your 97 Camry have?

To get back to the actual topic of the OP original post, I purchased a 2010 Corolla base model with the manual, cold weather package, and all weather mats for 100% financing including tax, title, etc for $0 down and $273/month for 36 months. This is with Toyota's 0.0% 36 month APR, and Mass 5% tax. Plus I get to deduct what I paid in sales+excise tax on my next tax return, just like anyone else buying a new car this year.

According to the media, that still needs to be voted upon...

Although, my distrust of the media is only slightly higher than car salespeople...

.

Also any suggestions on when and what to buy if my 97 Camry does not qualify. This badboy is on it's last legs so I need to start looking for a new car quick. I figure this weekend is not a good time look because the dealerships will be stiff on prices because of the clunker frenzy. I really like the deal on the pt cruiser but does the incentives qualify if your not doing a clunker. This is my first car purchase so any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah thats what I figured, my family was telling me they probably do it at the dealership but I didn't see how that would be possible.

The 2 billion went through but now has to be voted in by the senate, which I guess is up in the air.

Pontiac is having incentives of $4k. The models are very affordable.

I know what you mean, there were 8 Patriots in stock the day we were looking. We shopped Kia, Toyota, Honda and came back to Jeep 1 day later they were all sold but 2. No dealer within 75 online search would touch that deal as they only had 1-3 if any in stock.

We have a dealer who hawks:
Did you miss out on cash for clunkers??????????
We have made a special arrangement with uncle sam and our financiers to offer it to you....
>>>very fine print says
on selected vehicles and financed with us.

How shiesterish can they get?
By selling you the 'selected' vehicles at List.
That's how rip off they can be.

Thats what he was selling,
highly loaded cars which would get the $4000 off of list anyway
