All laptops are basically the same, usually the cheapest deal you can find is at WalMart or Best Buy. Most of the time the cheapest model is HP or Compaq (same company). An AMD has worse battery life if it is the same weight, so pay a little more for an Intel if you want the best combination of battery life and low weight. If you don't care about the weight or battery life AMD is fine.
Sony tends to be pricier, and Toshiba has the worst customer service and support of the group.
I would also consider an Acer - just be a bit pickier about build quality.
Finally, avoid BestBuy and Office Depot, who are generally the worst about high pressure upselling of overpriced services and accessories.

My family uses Dell laptops and desktops. They're not too bad and the price isn't too expensive either.
You should go to best buy and maybe play around with the ones they have out for people to test. And check the reviews online.
HP seems good except I have quite a few friends who complain about their HP having problems that they have to send it in to get it fixed, but it could just be them.
