We had a normal def dvr die recently. I called Directv and they said they would send a new one for $20 for postage both ways, no other fees. At that time I tried to wiggle another HD-DVR out of them,we have one in the living room already, I even offered to pay the difference from a standard to a HD_DVR, and it was no, no, and no not possible.
The Fedex trucks rolls in this morning , and drops off a brand new HD-DVR, I looked on the web site and they billed $19.95 plus tax, $21.xx. We hooked it up, called it in, and its all working just nice right now.
Who knows why they sent a hd version, but it is here. I cant promise this will happed to you, but it may be worth a try.

Some markets have moved their locals to the HD dish, so you WILL need a HD capable box to get them in the near future. If you have Directv and are in a market that requires 2 dishes, call Directv and you'll likely get a free upgrade (plus dish install)
Depends on the model you got. If you got an HR2x then it's a high def. If you got an R22, then it's a standard DVR that is actually a hi-def one but with the hi-def portion being disabled. It has component outputs and hdmi afaik, but only does 480p.
Consider yourself lucky you got sent that. Depending on the market, they send those though they are supposed to send out R16.
Pros and cons between an R16 and R22. First one is faster, second one can be networked and has all the add-on things the high def ones.
chibimike said:Anyone know when the new DirecTivo HD is due in? I really want to go back to DirecTv as comcast blows for TV. Great internet service though.
Orignally announced for this year...now put of "til 2010" - nobody knows when. I too, will immediately go back to DirecTV when this happens.
Currently have standard def. with 2 dvrs, and a directv customer for about 1 year. We just bought our son a small hd tv for his room. I called directv for what they could offer me. They didnt come up with much. 199 for hd dvr, 99 for receiver + shipping (20) and could give me $10/off for 6 months. Was hoping for free equipment. I have only called once so far. Anyone else have any ideas or suggestions that can help me out? Or just keep calling back to see if I get a better offer/csr?
