I commute 170 miles round trip 2-4x/wk, I'm an ESPN Radio addict and I'm losing reception on my local ESPN Radio station about 55 miles out, so I'm thinking about going with satellite radio. I'm interested in the cheapest, easiest install I can get and since I'm going for talk radio rather than music, I'm guessing connecting to my car's stereo via built-in FM transmitter is the best route for my 2000 Jetta, which doesn't have any sort of onboard satellite radio or easy connection for direct wiring. Since both XM and Sirius carry ESPN Radio and I probably won't listen to music more than maybe 5-10% of the time, I guess it doesn't matter whether I go with XM or Sirius, would you agree? I've done a search and it looks like most of the XM and Sirius threads are talking about deals for existing customers, not for new ones, but there were some deals for friends and family .

So, I'm thinking about going for the lowest-level Sirius radio

Stratus 5 radio and car kit for $9.99

This friends and family deal requires a 6 month subscription for $77.70 in order to get the discount on the hardware.

Anyone know of a better deal out there? Any thoughts on the Stratus 5 radio? It looks like more expensive radios either offer more info on their screens and more presets, or are portable units (which isn't important to me).

Thanks for the input.

There are sites that sell new and refurb sat radios pretty cheap. Just do a google on xm or sirus.

Mobile phone with unlimited data plan, ESPN radio access (iPhone, Crackberry, Windows Mobile, etc) - no need for XM/Sirius sub.

How exactly do I save a $13/mo. fee by subscribing to a cell phone plan that will cost me at least an extra $40-50 over my standard cell phone charges??? (not to mention will probably require me to upgrade my cell phone for at least as much as the cost of a cheap sat radio receiver).
