Stars Guitars is a family friendly annual event benefiting the Charles A. Main, M.D. Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fund of Beaumont Hospitals. The fund is named in honor of Dr. Charles A. Main, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Beaumont Hospitals, who wanted to encourage his young patients to overcome their health issues and strive to become independent and productive citizens. The scholarship program was created to assist young cancer survivors in meeting the expenses of an advanced education and to honor outstanding achievements made by current and former patients of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. The Charles A. Main, M.D Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fund has been expanded to include medical grants to treat the late effects of the very treatments that saved the lives of these children. Common side effects include cardiac and respiratory issues, vision and hearing problems, delayed growth and development and learning disabilities. Currently one of every 1,000 eighteen year olds in the United States is a survivor of childhood cancer. Their dreams of the future are clouded by the nightmares of their past. The years of chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, bone marrow aspirations and hospitalizations exhausts the child's energy and their parents' savings. This, plus the years of missed school and lingering health effects due to their cancer treatments, leaves these young adults with little opportunity to attend college. Thanks to many generous donors, the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department of Beaumont Hospitals has been able to give these young adults the opportunity to turn the trauma of cancer treatment into bright futures. Twenty-eight scholarship recipients are attending college this year. Since the scholarship's inception in 1992, one hundred children have been awarded over $500,000. With the survival rate for childhood cancer improving yearly, we need your help in keeping our promise to these special children. General Admission Ticket includes Concert & Regular Auction seating.
