This is great news!

Great idea.

This was posted here a couple of weeks ago.

Target (TGT), the fifth-largest U.S. retailer last year, will announce Monday plans to give customers a 5-cent discount for every reusable bag they use to pack their purchases.

The move comes within days of Drugstore giant CVS' (CVS) plan to give participating CVS customers $1 cash bonuses on their CVS cards every four times they buy something but don't request plastic bags

-------

I'm glad CVS is rewarding the refusal of bags, not just bringing your own. I wish Target was too.

Two of my local grocery stores have been doing this for awhile. Great to see more companies hoping on board.

Yes. Even local Giant grocery stores in VA doing this for over 3 years now

You bring up a good point though--are they going to try and cram everything into as few bags as possible to keep from paying the discounts?

Of course, there's usually only 1-3 bags unused, if you brought in 50 bags for a stick of gum I'm sure they would only give you credit for one bag.

I noticed if I buy a certain amount at CVS I get some big discount coupons on my receipt. Usually get them at $15+

So, CVS has started this program - basically they require you to buy a "Green Bag Tag" for $1.00 and then you can put it on one of your reuseable bags and they will scan it when you use the bag. The [first] catch is that it requires you to use their CVS reward card (which is fine for me) and then every 4th visit they give you $1.00 in Extra Bucks. So, basically it is $0.25 back for using your "bag tag", HOWEVER the second catch is that you can only get "credit" for using a reuseable bag ONCE per day (which again seems fine given that they are giving you $0.25 back).

NOTE: I purchased my "green bag tag" about a week or two ago and noticed that their "tracking" isn't working too well. In particular I used the bag tag for the third time (on three different days) and the receipt showed I used it three times and had one to go to get the reward ($1.00), however I then bought a second item on the same day and used the bag and the cashier scanned the tag and the second receipt (same store, same card, just later in the day) showed that I had only used the bag tag TWICE and had TWO to go. So it is almost like they took away a use because it was scanned a second time. I'm going to wait for my next trip to see what the receipt says (should be four uses and $1.00 back), but for now it looks like their system isn't programmed correctly (plus I had another trip on an earlier day that even though the tag was scanned it didn't show up as a credit, but that may have been because the cashier scanned the tag before the CVS card).

Something else that a lot of the cashiers don't know about, is that you have to scan your CVS card and at least one item before you scan the tag, or the computer will ignore it.

I still get a kick out of the puzzled looks from the casher when they scan my tag and it rings up as $0.00. Then, they put my reusable bag and the items I purchased in a plastic bag and hand it to me.
