Netflix Q and A

Netflix to begin streaming to the PS3 next month. It will not be through the dashboard there is a disc you need to order. Order Disc

Mods please move if this post is in the wrong section.

The Discs are not available, you can sign up for a notification of when they will be available.

I wonder how Netflix is planning to throttle downloads the same way they throttle disks my mail.

this is great news. I have been using Play On and I have had so many issues with it plus its free!

Too bad you have to put the disc in the console every time you want to stream Netflix. Still, this is good if you don't have another way to get Netflix on your TV. I'll stick with using my TiVo.

Apparently that will only be in the beginning. An update will be released by the end of year or top of Q1 2010 which will require the streaming directly on the PS3 without the use of the DVD.

I wish they provide this feature through the BDS-350

Not sure if you meant that Netflix is intentionally slow in sending the next movie in your queue, or if the use of the USPS altogether is a throttled way of renting. If it's the first, I guess I've had a much different experience with Netflix. I live on the far outskirts of a metropolitan area, and when I leave a DVD in my mailbox for return to Netflix (not picked up until mid-afternoon), I receive the next movie 2 days later virtually every time. Seems they are sending my next movie within hours of receiving my return, with overnight delivery in both directions. I can't ask for more than that.

Netflix was sued, and lost, a lawsuit about them delaying the delivery of disks to those who rent a lot. My delivery was fantastic for perhaps a year until Netflix decided I had rented enough movies and then even though I dropped my Discs off in the same post office as their mail box they took a week to mail the next DVD. I am expecting they will do the same thing with downloads.

will movies even look close to dvd-quality? i currently buy bluray movies only; not even looking at dvd's anymore.

dongky - it will depend on your internet connection speed.

I have a fast connection (20Mb) and (when streaming to my TiVo HD) always get the best quality stream Netflix offers. I'd say that their HD content is better than DVD-quality, but not as good as Blu-ray, OTA, or cable. Personally, I only use it for content that isn't available on Blu-ray.

This has been my experience as well, although I have been with Netflix less than a year. I typically see two days between movies. One day to mail it to them, they ship out the next the same day (most recently, the received at 6:57 am and shipped out 2:47 pm) and one day for it to be mailed back to me.

So far I've been very impressed. I'll be disappointed if it changes.

Got email from Netflix, I will be receiving my PS3 disc tomorrow. yay.

got my disc today.

I got as well. Playing pretty well.. although i do see streaming issues. but overall interface is great.

Same with me. Great streaming with my PS3 and that's with the wireless setup! I also like the interface much better than with my TiVo HD.

I agree about the interface being better on the PS3, but I think my TiVo is generally giving better PQ.

Can someone make an ISO of the disc and email it to me, I requested one, but have yet to receive it and would like to get it going before i go back to work on Tuesday. What kind of movies are available to be streamed, new releases or older ones? Thanks a ton.

Hows the quality as well?

The disc must be a Blu-ray, because my DVD drive won't recognize it.

To see the content available for streaming you can just log in to your Netflix account. You don't need the disc for that.

I dont have Netflix, do I need to be a member to receiver a disc, maybe thats why I havent received a disc or an email about it yet.

Good question, but I think you need to be a subscriber to get the disc.

I have signed up on the Netflix site to be notified when a disk is available and they have still not notified me.

The Netflix Blog said they shipped 100,000 discs already and will ship more in the next few weeks.

Today we shipped instant streaming discs for PS3 to about 100,000 Netflix members who requested them. After we tune a few more details, we expect to ship to everyone else within a couple of weeks. We’ll send you an email as soon as we ship your instant streaming disc.

Yes, you have to be a member.

I received my disc 11/7. Playback is a little bit laggy, and it's somewhat inconvenient to punch in a code on your computer every time you insert the disc into the PS3. HD movies look surprisingly good. The interface is nice enough, but I have not found a search function. Overall, I can't complain, as it's basically a free upgrade. It will be nice when the exclusive Netflix/XBOX deal expires, so the PS3 will most likely support Netflix without a disc inserted. In the meantime, I will still definitely use this!

I have just received an e-mail from Netflix that streaming to PS3 is now available... a little late. A guess it was pointless to have signed up for a notification of when the service becomes available.

Playback works fine for me. And quality is almost DVD quality. I had to punch in my code twice. But now it automatically logs me in.

There is no search function like on their homepage but you can search by categories (New Releases, Comedy, etc) and instantly add them to your queue
