My contract is over soon with Verizion Wireless. With the new additional requirement of a data plan for any decent phone, the monthly price would shoot up about 25.00 more per month. Going to Sprint would yield about the same price as I am paying now. Going to T-Mobile would drop the price about 20.00 per month. I tried T-Mobile about 10 years ago it was horrible in the upstate NY area. Anyone know how they are now?

I'm in upstate NY, I tried a T-Mobile phone recently because I am always tempted by their low prices. Lousy voice coverage, much worse than Verizon or AT&T. The coverage maps seem pretty accurate from what I've seen, take a look. Tmobile Verizon Don't know about Sprint, but assuming their map is accurate it is here: Sprint I don't know about data.
FWIW.. I have Sprint.. and I drove from Bergen County, NJ -> 287 North -> 87 North -> 17 west -> 81 North -> 90 West to Niagara Falls.. and had pretty good coverage all along that route.
I lived in Northern NJ and had very bad coverage inside the apartment (any building interior in my case) from T-Mobile. I had to go near windows to get signals. Friends who had other carriers but same phone model had good coverage.

Outside coverage was decent. You should've asked TMobile for a @Home router. It makes a world of difference (If your phone supports it).
FWIW, I was a Cingular/AT&T customer for nearly 10 years because I heard nothing but terrible things about Sprint. I switched to sprint about 3 years ago and could not be happier with the service. I have traveled extensively around the country and have very good luck with coverage.
We had Verizon years ago with numerous problems and not very good phone service at numerous places (that were close!). We switched to Sprint about 6 years ago and have really never had any major issues. I work on the lower level of a hospital. My phone rings and I get service where as others say their phones have zero bars in our area. Also, many employers offer discounts thru your work. I think we save 17% where I'm at. Best of luck on whatever you choose.
Forgot to add: we go on a cruise about every other year. I even had great service in the Carribean! We own a business so we had to phone back to check on things.

I also live in Northern NJ and have had T-Mobile for over 6 years, and love'em! Even the lure of the iPhone hasn't been enough to make me leave.
Do I have any 'dead spots' ? Sure, but less than friends with each of the other services. Their CS is second to none, and there has never been an issue with coverage for me, even when traveling.
If you call them and speak to them abut coverage in your area, they will check out signal strength while you are on the line with them. They are honest about it , too. They told my friend in another state that strength was not good in her area, but that more towers were being built to compensate. They recommended that she check back in 6 months with them. She ended up on a prepay for about a year, then switched to their service and has been very happy.
Have you looked into one of the new prepaid plans? My contract with Verizon will be ending soon too. Because of Verizon's recent changes in regards to data (in my case, no longer offering unlimited data via V-Pack for $15,) I've been looking into Straight Talk and Page Plus. Unlimited minutes and texting and data for $45 with no contract/commitment almost seems too good to be true!
