I am looking to buy a DSLR camera. I was wondering which would be the top pick between D3000 vs D5000 vs D90. If you want to suggest some entirely different model, thats fine as well.Obviously the price keeps going up but based on the recommendation I would be willing to buy either of them. Also, I was thinking I need a camcorder as well so is it okay to get one which has the video taking capability or I should buy a separate camcorder? I need basic video's, nothing too fancy. I was looking at the feasibility of carrying one camera as oppose to carrying two items hence trying to combine the camera and video into one.

I look forward to the suggestions!

If you don't want the weight of carrying a camera and a camcorder, are you sure you want the weight of an SLR? If you are willing to use flash on your indoor pictures and you aren't doing sports photography, many P&S cameras work very well (and some of them have decent video capture as well).

If you do need an SLR, but weight is still a concern, you might like the Olympus PEN E-P1. E-P2 should be released January 2010, so if you can wait until then you might prefer that or the E-P1 price may be reduced at that point.

if it is your first dslr, the 3000 should be great unless you want video. 5000 has video. the fold out screen on the 5000 is poorly designed and not a useful feature. not many got deals on the 5000 to be found. a few good deals ob the 3000 though.

Similar to the D5000 level, FWer rate the following a Green Hot Rated Deal

If you are in the market for both a DSLR and a camcorder then I think just dropping the extra scratch on a camera that does both makes the most sense. IMHO The D5000 is nice but the swivel screen makes me nervous. I can think of many instances where a swivel screen, had my DSLR had one, would have been broken. The D-90 is a very popular model it has 12.9 megapixels, and movie captures at 1280 x 720 (720p). Here is a video shot with the d90. link
