I have an '08 Hyundai Tucson and I need a duplicate key made. Seems like the key has something that needs to be programmed to sync the car and the key and the cost is $65 for the "programming" and $15 for the key.
Actually, Smart Key is not necessarily a better solution.
Some dealer will charge you $80 to $100 just to program the key, and the key will cost you from $200 to $300+ depend on the manufacturer, my dealer quote me $400 bucks when I asked about getting third Smart Key.
Because Smart Key is base on RF, it hates to be next to cell phone, in fact, Nissan had a big problem with their Smart Key getting damaged by cell phone.
Double check on the Hyundai forum, you might be able to find out how to program the key yourself, generally it involves two key, your car and some brake/accelerator tapping, at least for Mazda it can be done, for some of the Toyota, it can also be programmed using your car. If you can program, then just buy the chipped key and get it cut any where.
Seems like most stores won't cut a transponder key - something about store policy. Why a "store policy"??? I purchased a spare remote and blank transponder key for my Ford on FeeBay, and the local hardware store reluctantly cut it and could not charge me.
Mind you, the instructions for coding the remote and programming the transponder key into the security system is in the owner's manual!
