Im really deciding between the Best buy Toshiba and the Office DepotHP. I like the smaller size of the Toshiba, also comes with better RAM, HD, and printer and case.
op, the cheapest one available on bf is what id recommend
And dont let the salesmen or managers hound you into buying any accessories or protection plans. theyre ludicrous because theyre never gonna benefit you, only profit the stores, and you'd be spending way more money than you intended to. i dont care what theyre called. theyre all bs and rip offs to try to make the customer spend more than they ought to. it dont matter even if they kowtow to you, or offer u a job there. DONT BUY THOSE "EXTRAS." I wouldnt even buy a far printer, or coupons for extra accessories. thats how much i hate this crap they throw on u in the highfaluting name of giving customers the "entire package." What a load of crap! id shove my entire (bodily) package up their asses if they were to keep insisting that I buy these and those extras
trust me a cheapo laptop with a mere 2gb ram and 160gb on windows xp, vista, or 7 seems inferior and feeble compared to the $500-$600 laptops now with 4GB RAM+, 320GB HD, and cool bells and whistles, but for your needs and most fwers' needs, the cheapest ugliest laptop will suffice.
Thats what id buy. besides theres less likelihood of it being "lost" than a more expensive or fancier laptop.
emachines compaq acer Toshiba, etc. all have super low price laptops. its all about wich one has the cheepest deal on bf
a $1 saved is a $1 earned

You will not get Toshiba since they will have 5 per store, unless you are a caveman ready to battle with lunatics that will camp in front of the store. Best Buy on Black Friday is nothing more than a bait and switch business.

if i dont get the $500 one then i'll just get the $400 one that doesnt include printer or case and just buy an xtra stick of ram.

You my friend are an idiot. So buying Microsoft Office, or a flash drive or more memory is a waste?? What if the laptop is for a student?? They wont ever need Word or a flash drive to save their stuff on for school??? I've seen your posts on here a lot, why so angry, what retail store fired you for being an idiot?

I think the message should be not to buy it at the time of buying the system. The stores with the deals on systems tend to have extra memory for $70-$90, where you can buy them at Newegg for less than $20, for example.

Recommendation needed: I have a Toshiba laptop from 2001 - I leave it hooked up to my LCD so that I can watch Hulu. My issue is that my laptop is very choppy with videos - especially on full screen. Sometimes I can deal w/ it but often it's too much. Is there a certain laptop on BF that would be better for this purpose than others?

With all due respect, that wasn't really how I interpreted his message at all. My read was more "don't buy anything extra at the time you buy the laptop." Obviously, depending on the intended use of the machine, you'll need to add "stuff" to it, but (as pyee01 pointed out) the sales people really try to hit you hard with the "upgrades" at the point of purchase, especially on BF. From what I've seen, the accessories offered as "add ons" are usually overpriced relative to what most FW'ers can get on any given day, with the possible exception of a piece of software like MS Office. Shoppers can often get caught up in the thrill of finding a great deal on BF and be easily persuaded to pick up certain (relatively) non-hot enhancements for their new-found toys, thereby negating the hotness of the original deal. The sales folk know this and apply the pressure to anyone they suspect might bite. I don't remember the last time I went to a best buy or Circuit City(RIP) and didn't have them lay into me trying to convince me I needed a wireless mouse or a new USB drive or the "virus protection and optimization package" for a new laptop, or the extended warranty (for damn near anything I buy).
OP is a new member and may not be fully aware of the intricacies of BF...seemed like pyee was just trying to help make sure he doesn't get pressured into buying anything he could likely get a better deal on after the fact, when not in the midst of the doorbuster scramble...
OP - as to your question, it really depends what you need the laptop for. The BBY Toshiba looks fairly solid, but if a bigger screen is important to you, then the HP might be a better bet. Sony might be good in terms of potential resale, but I know people who find the Vaios uncomfortable to use...
