Good article on how Black Friday deals often don't work out.
Some quotes:
article said: Should Black Friday deal hunters feel cheated? Yes they should, say some retail experts. Here's a Black Friday reality check: Of the hordes of pre-dawn shoppers who line up for hours outside stores on the day after Thanksgiving, most will not bag the best bargains that appear in merchants' circulars.
article said: What do you mean this HDTV is a "derivative?" Some of the holiday electronics with those low sale prices are derivatives, models that have a few less features than a standard model in that product line, said Dworsky. article said: "Since retailers don't have a live inventory online you run the risk of getting an e-mail weeks later that your order had been delayed or worse, canceled, because the product is out of stock," he said. About those rainchecks: Finally, if a retailer does offer you a raincheck on a deal, it could still turn out to be an empty promise, Flickinger warned.

LOL! Of course a reminder is always a good thing.
The derivative issue for one is good to consider as some people may think they are getting a deal but really are only getting a cheaper version of item they originally wanted.

I do like someone raising the derivative product issue. It may still be a good deal, but know what you are getting. I think a number of FWers have been taken in by this on TV deals lately.

Yep there are a few 40"+ models on BF that are 720p . . . 'caveat emptor' is the name of the game!
The quantities available are usually up to management discretion which is why they put a minimum in the ad and keep it low. The BB I work at has several dozen of each doorbuster laptop in stock and ready to go even though they say things like minimum 5.
Companies will offer slightly different versions of a product for big retailers so people can not do an apples to apples price comparisons (especially in the mattress industry). So when they do their doorbusters, the "derivative" product might be the only one they have in stock.
