I just got my bill for AT&T DSL without land line. They are charging me $37.95 for 1.5Mbps access. (Which by industry standards is way too high.)
Looking at this website, it seems like it should be $35. http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=11523 However, when I call the number, they say that the above page does not apply. One rep told me it was because I was in a BellSouth state (which is bogus, because on the page above, it says North Carolina). The second rep told me that the rate above was only for AT&T U-verse subscribers. That also sounds bogus since it doesn't say "U-verse" on that page anywhere and U-verse is a different option on the drop down. Two reps have refused to alter my rate.
I have found it very difficult to simply lower my bill from ANY service company unless I simply tell them that I want to cancel.. Do you have any other choice ?? TWC, comcast etc.. other FWer's might have better idea..

I'm in the Raleigh/Durham, NC area and I have just gotten Earthlink. It's 29.95 per month for the first 6 months and $41.95 per month after that. The speed is up to 7Mbps. It works through your cable and TWC comes out to install it. There are some cheaper options but I believe this is the best value. www.earthlink.net

In some areas you can get no-landline AT&T dsl for 19.9x + taxes for 768 speed, so that might be a cheaper option.

I'm in Ral/Dur as well. For 7Mbps, that's great. Especially since I'm paying $37.95 for 1.5Mbps.

Yes, and it's legitimately that fast. I just did a speed test and my download speed was 6,894Kbps with an upload speed of 291Kbps. What's funny is that the bill comes from TWC that shows "Earthlink $29.95" whereas if I had gone through TWC to get the exact same thing it would have been twice that amount.

I'm in a Bellsouth state, and I used to have the 1.5M speed. I'm guessing you signed up a long time ago. If you call and tell them that you're upset that new customers get cheaper service than you do, they'll drop it to $32.95 with very little if you tell them you want to switch.
Or, if you want to get more out of the deal, do what I did: switch to cable for less than a month (I did 10 days), get a bill from the cable company, then sign back up with ATT. I'm now getting DSL 6Mbps, phone line (even though I have no phone plugged in at the house) for $40/month. BUT I also got $35 FW CashBack, a $75 ATT visa bonus card, and another $100 visa bonus card for switching from cable. Once you factor in the various rebates, I'm essentially getting phone and DSL for about $25/month.

Call Retentiontion NOW! Tell them you have a competing offer. I'm now paying $40/ month for ATT Elite 6mbps speed and local phone service landline. I also got $40 in prepaid cash cards from them because I threatened to switch to TimeWarner Cable.
I am wondering if anything else is available here? I am rural North Oklahoma, but very close to main fiberoptic. How would I find if there is a competitor?
I despise AT&T. I don't understand how they can charge $45 (here in atlanta) for 8mbps, and Comcast only charges $20 for 16mbps (though I regularly get 23mbps from Speakeasy Speed Test).
Getting to the point of this thread... I ALWAYS call and ask to speak directly with retentions, regardless of my issue. They have the most power, and are usually the most willing to help you.
