I need to replace my InSinkErator 1/3 HP BadgerŽ 1 Continuous Feed Disposer . Some how it's leaking from the bottom of the units (it has a few holes -- for air?) -- and the reset button area. Any thoughts, DIY experiences, and lessons learned?
I have this unit and I believe it has a 5 yr warranty. Look for a label on the back of the unit and call InSinkErator's Cust. Svc. Dept. with the serial #. They shipped me a new one for FREE! They have great customer service!!
If you get the same model and very similar to it then it will be a drop in replacement that wont take more than 15 minutes to replace even if you have no plumbing experience.
I got a Waste King SS8000, lifetime warranty. I did quite a search to find the best price. Of course this is if you plan to stay where you are. Easiest fix is to get a match for the one you have as vegetation suggested.

Any recommended brands/models? Costco has a Waste King Legend 8000 for $120 (after $30 off, last day) but it BIG (~16"x8" vs my 12"x5"). I'm considering just putting the exact model back in....

My only concern with getting the exact same model is from this quote from consumersearch.com
InSinkErator Badger garbage disposals are often installed by builders; however,
you may want to think twice about installing one as a replacement. One professional
review found the InSinkErator Badger 5 (*Est. $85) to be louder than the other
1/2-horsepower garbage disposals tested. It also doesn't grind vegetable scraps
as well as any of the other garbage disposals. This garbage disposal received a
rather low average rating of 2.6 out of five stars from about owners at Amazon.com.
The main complaint from the 15 owners that give it only one star is that the
housing cracked. The InSinkErator Badger 5 has a two-year in-home warranty.
Two other similar models are the 1/3-horsepower Badger 1 (*Est. $65) with a
one-year in-home warranty and the 3/4-horsepower Badger 5XP (*Est. $115) with
a three-year in-home warranty. Both of these also have low ratings from
owners at Amazon.com.
garbage disposals are definitely a very easy DIY project. Usually just involving screwing the nut and hooking up the power with a few twisties- very easy. Brands- I dunno- I have an insinkerator- works great, is the cheapest kind they make, was one the house when I bought it 4 years ago and is going strong.

I bought the Waste King 9950 from Sams Club, $114. It's not as big as the other model mentioned but it's very quiet and easy to install.
I had the same issue with a 4 year old insinkerator. It rusted out and needed replaced.
Waste King for me (3/4 HP). More quiet than the POS Insinkerator from Home Depot and works much better.
Unlike other posters, I found the installation to be very difficult. It's a 2-person operation imo and I did it alone. The trick is to prop the disposal unit under the sink drain so it is in position when you need to connect it. I have a double sink and for whatever reason, my arms will not reach in the sink and under the cupboard both.

I removed the old and it's heavy in the regard in trying to install it; but possible with just one person. I'd imagine that the new one (WK L 8000) will be even harder to do and will required 2-person to attach it to the sink.

I installed one myself too. One person job. The "rings" on the sink are really easy to attach the disposal too. I had a Kenmore for years, and needed to replace it with an insinkerator. I got a bigger one, but I'm almost positive the Kenmore was a rebranded Insinkerator (at least those made years ago).
Don't get builder grade, the more expensive ones are quieter. I also picked up mine on eBay (I wouldn't buy used, but it was old shelf damaged box). I searched for a stainless steel liner - everything every year is being made cheaper and cheaper - but that's just me. I'm sure anything you buy today would be fine if you aren't as anal as me. Surprising they can go up in price to a few hundred bucks, but I'm sure I got mine, 3/4 HP, ss liner, good brand, for less than a hundred.
Long shot but you might want to try Sears Outlet online (try several stores around you if you don't mind driving a little ways). You don't have to have a Sears Outlet!! They mark stuff down in the Sears Store and sell in online in Sears Outlet and you pick it up in your nearest Sears Store. Look how much they mark the treadmills down for example.

Thanks for the idea! Unfortunately, it looks like there is none around me (central florida) with a garbage disposal -- I did change to the atlanta region and they got one....
