Are you kidding ? I only use HDMI and DTS works fine for me. I was gonna say, "Please tell me DTS works over HDMI" because the ONLY reason I'd buy the WD Live is for DTS functionality. My original (gen 1) WD HDTV player doesn't do DTS, so I ALWAYS have to popcorn convert my MKV files on my HTPC if I want to play it on the WD HDTV player... it gets lengthy and annoying.

Dude I meant the original WD HDTV gen 1, not the live version. My WD HDTV player doesn't do DTS, and it sucks that I have to shell out all this money for a new one.

Maybe it got changed in a firmware release somewhere. Google largely tells me I'm wrong, perhaps I should try again.

The original WD (not the Live) plays DTS audio over HDMI but will not downconvert to stereo for direct TV connections. I also had to use Popcorns DTS to AC3 converter until I bought a new AV Receiver which handled HDMI inputs. (Yamaha RX-V765)

That article is talking about TrueHD, not DTS. The Live handles TrueHD by downconverting the 5.1 DTS core because of licensing issues, although I have experienced a few TrueHD samples working correctly with my new AV Receiver.

I'm wrong. Apologies. After further poking, the problem is actually with another part of my setup (again due to licensing.) BOTH TVs I've used the HDTVL with don't support optical passthrough on digital audio. Two different brands, no less. Thats what I get for running without a receiver.

I also had to use Popcorns DTS to AC3 converter until I bought a new AV Receiver which handled HDMI inputs. (Yamaha RX-V765) Well my main home theater system works with my HTPC. My WD HDTV player is for the bedroom, so when I want to watch a movie I throw one of my 1080p mkv files from my HTPC onto my 32GB flash, but if it's DTS (which it is 95% of the time), it won't play on my bedroom TV. So I have to do popcorn on the HTPC and it's just so much of a hassle to have to do that, wait the time, transfer to flash, etc... For those reasons I want the WD HDTV Live and a wireless adapter, so I'll never have to do any of that work, but not sure I wanna spend $100. I mean, how much would an original WD HDTV media player be worth, $50??

warning: this also does not play vhs, beta or tape format
Predator said: I am tired of the people who keep stating that this does not play rmvb. I have no idea where rmvb comes from unless you are downloading some very low quality crap. If the deal does not work for you keep moving, BTW with the "special" firmware this unit can play back almost anything that you may have with a clean interface.
I do not know what is RMVB. But what is wrong in alerting people that this device does not play a certain multimedia format?

OK...we're all trying to figure out why these devices...PCH, HDX, etc, etc...can't seem to get it quite right. If they need to do 10 things right, they get 8 and miss two. Yet, another device will get a different 8, and miss a different 2. So we bang our heads against the wall and say if XYZ can do these 8, and yet ZYX can do what XYZ is missing...why can't someone just figure out how to get EVERYTHING into one box? Surely, the technology is there...otherwise it couldn't exist elsewhere... Reference: AVS Forum: PopBox NOT in March!!
The more I read, the more I see the logic of either an Acer Aspire Revo w/XBMC, or (if you already own an xBox), an xBox w/XBMC).
love my xbox w/ xbmc.... still chugging after many years, and the gui can't be beat! I have transparency skin w/ all fan art, poster art, imdb info, ratings, link to trailers and some rather excellent camelot views... only thing I can't play are HD h.264. Not an issue in the bedroom for me, plus have desktop in living plus 2 HDMI equipped lappies anyway (that are grossly underused for htpc playback).
i think it is the singly greatest appliance I've ever owned, because it doubles at game heaven nostalgia. not just good xbox games (that i never really play but still); snes, nes, sega, genesis, turbographics 16, sega cd, arcade/mame, killer instinct emulator, new geo.
regarding this wd appliance, would like it a whole lot more if it came built in w/ wireles and some internal storage, but a nifty device nonetheless. I have absolutely no use for it, but love trolling the threads on it for some strange reason.
p.s. it prolly plays rmvb, but I wouldn't be caught dead storing media in some proprietary, craptacular container.
