Saw this on pcworld.com. Microsoft is offering Windows 7 Professional for only $29.99 to students with an .edu email address. This is a download-only price, getting a disk copy is a little bit more. Still a great deal if you qualify. Link

Edit: I know all about bootcamp, etc. but am just trying to figure out how to get it to work without having the CD.I think you are downloading an iso, no? If so, you just make a dvd (not CD)from that. IMGburn is easy.

If you're looking to install and activate one license key on 2 machines, then no. If you want to install (without activating) on a 2nd machine, then yes you can. And, no, can't use 2 .edu accounts under one owner.
This is DEFINITELY a nice deal except... This is for windows professional UPGRADE... so we can't install unless an O/S exists already. =/
*edit* Oops just saw your post... patricck said: Will this work without any previous OS? For new builds?
Typically "upgrade" means an O/S has to exist (a legit one)... hmmm... there are ways to trick it, but the last $29.99 deal was for retail copies. I was in school last year so I was able to grab that. Mine was a retail w7 pro x64... this one from this deal specifically says "UPGRADE"...
got the invitation e-mail and bought however it says proceessing my unlock code or serial number does anyone know how long this takes or what any advise would be appriciated thanks

Also remember you can join technet for $200 or less and get 10+ copies of windows 7 and 10+ copies of Office 2010 (+lots of other software).
Also note the "ultimate steal" MS office for .edu applicants can usually be installed on 2-3 PC's at the same time. We did this with office 2007 a year back and telephone MS support confirmed that.

Why would you sign up for a fake .edu address or use your alumni account!? IF your going to STEAL an OS from microsoft why wouldn't you just really steal it. I mean does paying $30 really make it any better than paying $0. Breaking their licensing agreement is breaking their licensing agreement.
You get no benefit from this unless you are actaully a student. In fact if you are not a student and you use this through a friend, or a fake edu or an alumni acct you are actually loosing $30 because you would be better off just pirating.

I got the same problem and was using Google's browser. Maybe I should have used IE?

I don't think the browser makes any difference. Last time I did this, it took a day before the serial number and download link showed up. I am guessing they have to verify the eligibility.

May I buy this now and sit on it for a while? Is there any time-limit for installing/activating?

Australia.edu is a rip-off. I did the initial sign up three weeks ago. They send me a message that an "Administrator needs to manually approve it". But the process can be faster for $20 donation. Of course I did not donate. Now my account is closed. Never got approved. What a joke.
The title is wrong, you don't really need an email ending in .edu, if you school is their LIST you are eligible. My school email ends on .net hosted by GMail and I got approved.

You're wasting your time anyway. The Australia.edu email addresses will not work with the Microsoft student deals. They killed that a long time ago. They let you THINK it's going to work then after you enter your credit card number and hit submit, it will say there was an error and to check your information. You'll never get beyond that point with an Australia.edu email address.

"You must be a student at a U.S. educational institution and must be actively enrolled in at least 0.5 course credit and be able to provide proof of enrollment upon request."

Really, it's only $200? That sounds like a good deal for a group of people such as a software club or something like that. Just get 10 people to join and pay yearly dues of $20 each.

This is a pretty good deal, at carnegie mellon uni they have windows 7 ultimate for 30 bucks which i just got. Probably not much difference between the two.
I disagree, i had gotten this deal 2x before from digital river and was able to do a clean install, no tricks needed. It can also be install using a usb flash drive. Just download app from microsoft to convert ISO to exe.

No you cannot legally install & activate one license key on 2 machines. if that's the case then everyone would be doing it.

RIP australia.edu discounts from working on these "student deals." It's OVER Johnny, it's OVER!

No, you are the only one who's ever heard of Linux and Open Office. It's news to everyone here. This thread, unfortunately for you, is not a Linux discussion thread.
"Laziness" has little to do with not wanting Linux. There are people who want to spend time tinkering with devices drivers, OS tweaks and configurations, and generally spending time twiddling around with their PC. There are others who just want to use their PC for work or recreation, then walk away from it. Since most workplaces, educational institutions, and people are using Windows, it's much more convenient and compatible to use Windows for the masses. Like it or hate it, it's way more plug and play than other OSes, and so will remain the OS that most people use until that changes.
The ubernerds of the world always assume and imply that other people don't do what they do out of ignorance or laziness. Not always the case. Sometimes, it's just out of a need to get things done and move on to living.
Let's not turn this into a "my OS is better than your OS" thread. They all have their place. This one is about a deal on Windows 7.
