xnoodle said: Why red? Decent price for this sort of drive. The 640GB from the Egg for $70 is a better gb/$ ratio, but that deal is dead.
Grabbed the 10% off coupon from www.CrazyTownDeals.com (Code: GXTPOFES ) and got the price down to $54. Maybe the red is for $6 in savings people are missing out on? I don't know.

Good link! I was just about to post it up myself.... funny there was a post about this same hard drive going for $55 just about a year ago, but that deal is no more.
One thing you did not point out that I felt was worth noting - if you sign up for Amazon Prime you get free 2 day shipping for a month I'm sure everyone knows that - I mention it more of a reminder than anything - September 1st is a big moving and back to school day If you have not yet taken advantage of the free Amazon Prime deal - now is a good time if you expect to be ordering a lot of items!! In that case, your $/GB ratio may also work out better. If you decide to use the Amazon Prime trial like I just did - make sure to go to your account settings and set your Prime Account so it does not auto-renew I like this feature (although if you have a good personal task management program, you don't have to worry about this sort of thing), but it will give you some message that by setting the option you may not be eligible for such deals in the future...but I don't imagine they'll actually do anything about it because that would be a bad business model for future growth
In my opinion, the portable drive. Runs cooler, draws less power Plus most 2.5" drives are designed to have shock protection from accidental droppage and such

first off, this already has free shipping so why would you need prime? second, if you are a student, then wouldn't it be better to take advantage of the free prime for students for 1 year instead of the month trial?

It really depends on what you are looking for. The one you linked is better price per gb, but you must power it with a power brick(included). That makes it less portable. The one that the op linked is powered via the usb cable so there is a few less things to carry around. IMO Yours is better if you plan on leaving it in one place(ie desktop). OPs is better if you are going to travel a lot with it(ie put it in a laptop bag)

What a load of crap. It's true the portable drives draw less power but that is because the spindle rate and access times are a bit slower. As far as 2.5% drives having "shock protection" - that's an extra feature that not all models come with. As if that matters. Most of the time I carry this in my backpack so I don't need to worry about that sort of thing.
All hard drives will fail eventually - they do not last forever. Have you seen a car last forever? Rarely ever. Neither type has an advantage when it comes to reliability. I've got all sorts of hard drives lying around my place - probably 20 or so... I've been at this thing a long time. The brand name weighs more factor in terms of reliability. I like Wester Digital & Seagate. I use nothing else.
This may be a good deal today ... but overall it is only fair at best. I paid $64 for the 1 TB version last year. Wait for the sales this fall if you can. They will blow this out-of-the-water.

Damn you for reminding me of my own mortality. I'll never live long enough to see a car last forever. You ruined my day... I hope you enjoy eternity in your super car!
I prefer these WD drives because they still use the mini USB connector. The micro USB connector on the new line of Passport drives becomes very loose and wiggles a lot after you plug/unplug a cable a few times. I have a drive at work that has become so loose that merely brushing against the cable causes the drive to unmount from the computer. The micro USB connector is simply not as robust as the mini connector. WD should not have changed the design.

Well i have seen ALOT of '57 Chevy's at car shows, Ford model T's too, not sure if they will be around in 10,000 years(pretty sure I'm not going to be), but as the song goes;
When we've been here ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we've first begun.
