Tempted to get the LG 42PJ350 instead. $110 difference after tax, better reviews. I don't know, $424 with tax for me, no interest for 18 months, pretty sweet.
Who makes the Insignia brand? A few months ago I was looking at at Zenith at Sears, priced about the same and it was an LG clone. I like the idea that it comes with the two year warranty. Use your American Express card and I think it doubles the mfg warranty.

This already comes with a 2 year warranty, based on the previous deal where it was like $360 after Bing, this should be made by Samsung.

I was talking with a Best buy manager about 2 months ago. I asked the same question. He told me that Samsung makes the Insignia TV's. The 2009 models and later are now Samsung, previously they were LG. The main difference being the features (I.e. no on timer) and contrast ratio.

i bought this exact tv and let me confirm it's a SAMSUNG. despite the good reviews, there are a few cons yall need to know. the glass has no tint thus highly reflective; good color calibration is impossible, meaning no matter how u tune this thang, human faces all look washed out and zombie-like; buzzing sound that comes and goes, so when u r in a very quiet room, it can be quite annoying. For xbox360, it's adequate. i have a panasonic plasma and a vizeo lcd, this insignia is the worst when it comes to color accuracy, but for gaming, it's #1, coz it's cheap and blindingly bright and comes with 2 years warranty.
Trying to decide if this is better then the Sanyo at WalMart for the same price delivered. Warranty might be better on this one, although I doubled up on the 1 yr. warranty with the Sanyo with my MasterCard. The Sanyo has nothing but rave reviews. Think I'll stick with it.

Couldn't find the Sanyo on the WalMart site for $399 but found this Viore 42" for $429. It has three HDMI inputs and it might be worth the extra $30 IMO.
Speaking about Insignia quality: so far pretty good. Bought a little side 19" LCD TV, the colors aren't the most accurate in the world but its plenty good for TV purposes (ie don't think you can do Photoshop on this TV as a monitor). Non hd content also looks a little bit splotchy but that might be the signal and the quality of smaller models. Also totally love their Insignia MP3 players...good reliability and features for the price.

It is not?
no - it is plasma
Is there a noticeable difference?
That isn't the point of tracker2208's comment. It is classified in the wrong category in the OP.
As far as LCD vs. Plasma, there are tons of opinions on the internet that state the pros/cons better than I could in a simple reply here. Both work for me.
This is a rebadged Samsung PN42C430. The back panel and menus is identical to the samsung (though it won't take Samsung firmware updates). I got this for $450 + tax - $90 BCB, came out to about $389 all told, and well worth it. This is a plasma- google for peoples thoughts on plasma vs LCD, but honestly I'm not enough of a connoisseur for it to matter. (AFAIK LCDs have better color, Plasmas have faster motion and darker blacks. I'm color blind anyway.)
Pros: Cheap Huge 2 Year warranty Has a great "Game mode" that beefs up contrast and brightness. Will accept any signal you throw at it from 480i to 1080p (downscales 1080 to 720p, but it's a good scaler). OH MY GOD THIS IS CHEAP. At this price, you're lucky to find a good 32" LCD.
Cons: Only 2 HDMI inputs, and 2 Component inputs. One component doubles as a composite too, but it's a max of four inputs plus cable/antenna. Insignia is the best buy "house" brand, so basically no snob/brag appeal. Sound is just "okay". Decent for regular TV/DVDs, but if you're getting HD/Blu Ray, you should consider an amp and a 5.1 system. Some people have complained about loud buzzing, but I haven't noticed anything like that. (Apparently it's worse at higher altitudes, and I'm 20 feet below sea level.) If you go through the menus too fast, you can crash the TV- the menus freeze, and it shuts off an reboots. Takes about 10-12 seconds. Apparently this is a problem on the Samsung model as well.
Just checked out Consumer reports - on this model. Of all the Plasmas they reviewed - this one is last on the list.
This model and the lower level Samsung are the only Plasmas on the list with "Average" rating for SD tv signal. The rest of the models - all sizes and brand - Rate above Average - or good.
Energy Efficiency - Below Average < lowest rating of all Plasmas >
This basic 720p (1024x768) 42-inch plasma TV from Insignia, Best Buy's house brand, offers decent performance at a comparatively low price. While high-definition (HD) picture quality was very good, the set's performance with standard-definition (SD) fare, while good, was below that of many other sets.
Looks the Insignia is a Rebranded Model - With a Name Change Samsung PN42C450

This panel has an extra pane of glass compared to the current generation Samsung planels. You can tell buy putting a blank sheet of paper up to this one and then put one on the PN50c450 (if you at Best Buy for example. When the piece of paper is held up against the Samsung PN50c450, you will see some sharp details. Against the Insignia (just like against a Panasonic panel), you won't see any sharpness/detail as there is another pane of glass between it and the image.

It is most certainly NOT a PN42C450, as the Insignia panel has an extra another pane of glass that the current generation Samsung panels do not have.. The C450 line is VERY energy efficient.
Crutchfield lists the power consumption of the PN42C450 at
Power On (ENERGY STAR) 111.80 watts Standby (ENERGY STAR) 0.60 watts
.....also, the remote is certainly at least a generation back Samsung remote.
I've never seen one, but I believe the C430 also doesn't have the extra pane of glass that the previous generations had....so I doubt it's that one either.

1. I've owned 2 westinghouse panels, a 32" and a 19". Both went bad. So personally, I have a bad taste in my mouth about Westinghouse.....
2. More importantly, I'm a HUGE Plasma fan.....I love the fact that the Insignia has a Samsung panel (albeit a generation back I believe)....and has a 2 year warranty.
For me PLASMA > LED-LCD 42 > 32 Samsung/Insignia > Westinghouse 2 year warranty > 1 year warranty
Plus, you'll get $5 in Reward Zone money and be 150 points towards the 250 you need for another $5. So, basically it's less then $40 (plus tax) to step up.
I'd be all over it!!!!

is this better than the one from Frys LG 42" last week? i still have the raincheck
Tgood1413 said: I just bought a 32" Westinghouse LED-LCD last week for $349- is this deal hot enough that I should consider making a return? I would say so. The only reason I could see staying with the Westinghouse is if it's 1080p and you're using it as a computer monitor. For every other use such as video games, movies, broadcast TV (especially sports), the plasma is way better. I suppose if you think 42 inches is too large for what plan to use it would be another reason, but besides that return it and get the Insignia.

While only 10" difference, the total viewing area is much much larger on the 42. Some mathematician can come in and post the square inch of both.... I flunked algebra, calculus and the higher up thingy so I cannot figure those numbers.

lol....I think you meant to respond to the guy asking about the 32" Westinghouse......
Because in this case a 42" is about the exact same viewing area as a 42".

You are correct..... I see much better with glasses on.

I'd agree
Cons Reprts - Has Westinghouse and Mitsubishi as the worst reliability ratings of 15 companies.
Westinghouse - 8 % Mitsubishi - 11 %
Were Repaired - or had serious problems
Compared to 2-4 % for the Big Boy Sonys, Panasonics, Samsungs, LG, etc..
Going slightly off topic, but Samsung just makes the best LCD screens period. I've gone into dozens of big box electronics stores, looked at the wall of TVs from 10-40' away and picked Samsung every time for best quality (contrast, color rendition, sharpness) without even looking at the badge on the front. Bought 2 Samsung 22" monitors, both color match perfectly (19" matching Acers didn't).
So since Insignia ~ Samsung, you can't really go wrong. I'd trust Sony, LG, and Dynex (rebadged LG me thinks) as well without having first hand experience, but not other ones like Vizio, Westinghouse, Panasonic, Sharp, etc etc.
Stick with Panasonic and Samsung Plasma for $100-200 more. Most have HQ picture and lots of connections like VGA and 3-4 hdmi.
According to Best Buy reviews, this plasma isn't so good. I don't expect it to last over 2 years because InSigma cuts too many corners.

I ended up picking one up yesterday, happy so far. Still waiting on a new HD receiver from DirecTV but standard def content looked fantastic. I played dumb and tried a 10% coupon and they wouldn't take it because the coupon said it could only be used on regularly priced items.
