It's like buying a BeBox back in the 90s--it might have a nice OS, but if you can't run any useful software on it... What's the point?

For the average consumer, this is a pretty stupid choice.

They're identical aside from the memory difference.

same thing here, got shot down in NYC... Great, I was debating whether to get a WebOS tablet, now the decision has been made. I will wait for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9.

Good deal.

only bad thing: you can't jailbreak like ipads, not worth it

HP doesn't have a good history with supporting early adopters, or being proactive with updates on their bleeding edge products.

That said, this product probably has a better browser, which is 50% of what I would use.

jailbreaking, maybe not, but there are ways to tweak it ... for instance - overclocking the touchpad

Typically I would never call about a deal, but given that corporate had already sent out a message about this, I called them to confirm that the communication had in fact gone out as I was told in store. They said that their communication said the stores *are* to accept the coupon, for a total discount of $200 off, as long as you have the coupon. I went back to the store, and after a brief debate with them, one of the managers made a phone call that led her to honor the coupon. I asked her if the communication they received earlier had been updated and she said that it had - so anyone who has been denied should be able to use this method to get the discount.

There's no need to - it's essentially "jailbroken" out of the box.

Don't call man, just figure it out & report back to us.

I just got a 16 GB Touchpad via the in-store kiosk at a Staples that had the 16GB out of stock. I walked in, went straight to the kiosk, searched and added the 16GB to cart, selected the "pay in store" option, and then printed out the receipt. Then I walked over to the cashier, and paid, showing them the coupon. The coupon rang up, along with another "instant" coupon that took the other $100 off. $299 + tax out the door. It may be YMMV based on whether the cashier will call the manager re the $100 coupon, but it rang up fine for me.

hmmm....take back my Dell Streak 7 from last week? Damn these choices.

You may agree to disagree.. Here is my math on buying a Tablet.
HP Touchpad > Andoid (OS, GUI, Flash, Multi Tasking)
HP Touchpad > Ipad(HW, OS, GUI, Flash, Multi Tasking)
HP Touchpad < Android < Ipad (Apps)
HP Touchpad <= Ipad (Sexyness and Weight)
HP Touchpad > Android > Ipad (VPN Support)
HP Touchpad = Android = Ipad (Imp Games like Angry bird)
Now HP Touchpad > Android(Highend) > Ipad(Price)

$399.99 w/ free shipping at Newegg now, and it comes with a $30 promotional gift card (exp. 8/7).

tempting... omg

Yes! I purchased the 32 GB HP Touchpad from my local Staples Store and used the coupon and purchased it for $399! Yes, the 32GB! Word of advice, call before going to the store b/c most stores only have or had 1 or 2 available. Happy Shopping!

Just checked OD on Coleman in San Jose, they won't take the $100 TouchPad coupon. But they did mention OD is taking the $100 off coupon on the Blackberry Playbook and Acer Iconia. YMMV per usual with this stuff.

You can still run a web browser with Flash, that worth something, maybe even $300.

Lincoin, CA no go. The manager came from another failure store from G Bay was rude. He does not care of customers. I hate to go to that store.

Staples manager said no matching for kiosk orders, he said he already got instructions from Staples

OD happily PMed it

Mrkk....what price did you get it for?

i am thinking this thing is going to go the way of the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oQO8nqQ98Y so i will get one in january for 150..

Picked one up for $270 + tax (I got my 10% employee discount).

Just a word of advice as a Staples employee: find the kiosk in store and order it online. When it asks to pay online or pay at register, click on pay at register. An order sheet with a barcode will print out, which you take to the cashier.

As far as I'm aware, we haven't received any corporate notices saying not to honor the coupon. My manager did it for me without any hesitation. If you want to make sure no one is going to BS you about fake corporate notices, make sure to mention you're interested in the 2-year protection plan offered for tablets. Buy the warranty with the tablet and then just return the warranty later. Any manager or tech associate is going to be willing to try as hard as possible to get warranty sales.

Umm, yay? So it's a PornPad. Great. What's it useful for?

Some of you folks haven't given any thought to owning a computer that has no software.

umm, yay? so you have no interest in this thing? why are you in here?

keep up the fight lol

Well, it's got Kindle, which is a big one for me. Also a reader for all the Time Warner publications. It's got HP Movie Store, Citrix Receiver, a solid Twitter app (Spaz), QuickOffice, box.net, Angry Birds, and a great Facebook app. Besides, I think a lot of the need for mobile apps has been because of the deficiencies of mobile browsers. YouTube app? Nah, on the Touchpad you just need the browser.

they referenced fat wallet and this deal on http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2390567,00.asp

Does somebody know if this thing runs Java?

slickdeal45 said:

Why on Earth did you buy this? You wanted a chunky tablet that only does web-browsing?
Very good post, but you seem do not undestand what fatwallet means, people buy here everything for a feel of saving $100 or more, they never care what they buy and how to use that, just buy with saving, it is fun, please understand that, otherwise you will get lot of red, and yes I have about 10 different tablets iPad, iTouch, coolPad and so on running different OS and have different shapes and so on, I turned on them just once, said WOW, then then put in in garage for better time

I'm no lover or hater of any tablet OS's, but it does crack me up when people talk about these devices based on two criteria: 1) Does it have flash?and 2) Can I download hundreds of thousands of apps?

Frankly most would be happy to play Angry Birds.

i have like 5 of these:
1. the browser is poop. worst than ipad browser. does not remember scrolled location after a back. has no gesture support for back, just a tiny back button (Virtual) that you have to hit.
2. the flash crashes alot (duh) you knew this right.
3. impossible to play flash games and hulu and southpark freak out alot with commercial loops
4. no DRM at all. you can install preware and freaking just copy com.my.app.game off the device and throw it on another. no DRM at all. Unless the author implements DRM - ?!? - likewise you could just as easily install a virus (like android).
5. it's orientation sensor is on crack -straight up cracked out.
6. there are no apps. Honestly go get yourself an IPAD1 with 3G (gps) and jailbreak it. you'll be years off in advance.

(yeh HP gave me all 5; sorry they all fail on the count of lack of apps that are quality and serious o/s bugs - it was released too early).

are you sure about this? Because i went to a Staples store in Michigan this morning and was denied. The manager said he talked to corporate which he claims to have told him not to accept the coupon. The manager also said that you can't combine coupons with other offers anyways (regardless if its HP's)

DANG IT!

My point is most would be happy just having a decent web browser, email client, music player, calendar, and perhaps the ability to play Flash videos, and yes play Angry Birds. That covers a large amount of what people are going to be using a tablet for I think. A star-gazing gyroscope-powered astronomy app is nifty and all, but I'm not looking to fork another $200 far that and other such curiosities.

Yes, but it doesn't surprise me that they said that - it's exactly what they told me initially. If you can't get them to call corporate while you're in the store, then maybe you could try calling them while you're standing there. When I talked to them they were very clear on the fact that the stores *were* supposed to accept the coupon for a total of $200 off, and after returning to the store they did for me.

Just thinking.....
IF you can get a Staples store to accept the $100 coupon, do you think you can also use the 10% customer appreciation coupon tomorrow effectively bringing the 16gb model to $269?

I don't think anyone has mentioned that the Touchpad and HP will give you a free, lifetime 50gb box.net storage account. That is a nice deal with the Touchpad.

http://blog.box.net/2011/07/01/bringing-box-to-hp-touchpad/

Ok I called a Office Depot and these guys at this one will actually accept last weeks coupon but I have to have the coupon that has a name on it not a reprint. Can someone PM me with last weeks coupon with a name on it?

Where can you get this original coupon? Was it mailed out? emailed? My Staples is giving me the runaround for having a printed copy.

Confirmed this worked in Atlanta.
Sister just ordered hers although she opted for the 2-yr protection plan ($99).
I expressed concern about the insurance but she felt more comfy with it than without it.

I cameup with another math for those Staples deal didn't fly.

for CA folks this is what you have to pay
299 + 32 (Gas+Tax) + 10 Fee to CA govt to recyle.

= 342.

on e b a y some seller is selling new with complete warrenty for around same price

search for "HP Touchpad 16GB WiFi 1.2GHz Tablet with WebOs" and sort price.

I'm still denied at local Staples. Do You guys feel this can be a better buying option?
