I think opening it up will void the warranty so think carefully about that people. Hard drives seem so unreliable I almost expect them to crash eventually. I've had several different hard drives go bad on me (not any particular brand).

Yes, you can also use that code on the 2TB version of this drive. The code brings it down to $109.99. You can also use the $25 off coupon as well bringing it to $84.99 which isn't bad for a 2TB drive.
Don't bother to use the coupon/SR code in store. Chances are they won't have any in stock if they do, they won't accept the coupon and they will require to verify your SR (if you are using the 25% coupon). At least this was what happen to me in Edison, NJ. I order mine online + coupon ($20) + e-junkie 25off75 + link through discover for another 5% CB.

Say what? Of course they will accept both coupons in store, and of course you will need to ( and want to) verify yor Staples Rewards because unless they have your rewards number, how are they supposed to credit you the 25% in rewards? I did this yesterday, no problems at all
the point is moot now, as that 25% SR coupon has expired, but thought i should attempt to clear-up the misinformation

IIRC i think i once read or heard that a 2.5" drive can be powered by USB, but a 3.5" drive needs more power and has to be plugged in.

Yes, you can use a USB 3.0 drive with USB 2.0 it will just run at 2.0 speeds. Yes, the USB 3.0 cable is backwards compatible. It has more wires in it, but in a 2.0 slot it will just use what it needs.
Use the advanced USB 3.0 interface for maximum compatibility with standard desktops and laptops. USB 3.0 works with PCs equipped with a USB 3.0 port for maximum file transfer speeds, but also works with standard USB 2.0 ports. Or upgrade to FireWire 800 or powered eSATA by pairing the drive with the appropriate GoFlex upgrade cable. (Upgrade cables sold separately.)
USB 3.0 originally touted 10x the speed of 2.0, but with the bottleneck at the PC, 3X speeds are more realistic. Other caveot is that 5 meters is the max length of a 3.0 cable.
Does USB 3.0 really help for a single drive? I'd think the drive would get saturated first on sustained IO. I'd think USB 3.0 is more practical for non-spinning storage with lots of IOPS and Bandwidth, or multi-disk devices...

USB 2.0 480mbps USB 3.0 5GBps, real world testing 2.8GBps or ~ 5-6 times faster than USB 2.0
