very nice price for someone wanting more than a netbook.

Does anybody comment about this little thing as HTPC? I have a lot of HD videos on 1TB portable drive and a Lenovo's handheld wireless keyboard/media remote. Can this handle good quality streaming (Netflix/Hulu) or HD playing from my portable drive?

I have it. It's a little underpowered. Not a whole lot better than a netbook in terms of processing performance.

EDIT: I'm speaking specifically to someone who only needs to play video via USB...

wow, tempting! I'm a long time thinkpad user and can only consider a notebook with a trackpoint.

Can anyone comment on the feel of the keyboard?

I wanted browsing capability, Roku & WD TV don't do browsing. I used to have GoogleTV, it was good but was unable to decode DTS audio, so I was getting HD video but no audio, so returned that too.

I have the HP dm1z with the amd 350. Now I have to say the processor does run hot (using hw monitor) But I use a free program Brazos Tweaker and dropped the voltage down (not aggressive, he lists a setting for Lenovo to try) It save me 5 -9 degrees Fahrenheit. Now I used to to watch connected to my hdtv, I used Media player classic to play movies no problem. But I just recently installed Cyberlink power dvd (world of difference with the enhancements) and to use cyberlinks enhance you cannot use hardware acceleration so the processor runs from 40 to 80% usage. But if I disable cyberlink enhancements and use hardware acceleration then the processor is only running at 30% and the temps are fine also if you are using hardware acceleration, amd has in their profile windows a lot of enhancements for video playing. Netflix should be fine but I cannot advise about Hulu. But I have to say as a mobile lappy I slapped in an ssd and get 9 hours use. Another thing to try is Dataram Ramdisk (free version), I cannot use it because it crashes with the SSD's. But I had a netbook and used a ramdisk for windows temp and user temp files, what a world of difference in responsiveness. (you can never use hibernation when having a ramdisk if you save the ramdisk to disk)

This Lenovo only has 2 gig ram with W7 64 bit running. You would definitely have to bump it up to 4 gigs if the slot is accessible.

I also NES, SNES, MAME, Playstation emulators and etc in my HTPC based on AMD E350.
You can do a whole lot more if doing your own work rather than getting a "set-top box".

Underpowered little machine, even when upgraded to an SSD. (Yes, I have one.)
My advice, skip it unless you really know what you're getting. WAY better laptops out there for the $300.

Not better for the weight and battery life though.

do you have any example that are in the 12" 3lbs range?

In this form factor? Link?

Anyone able to get OS X installed and working on this machine?

I've a Atom D525 HTPC. While it is decent for running XBMC/movies, I'd hate to use it on a daily basis as a laptop.

Not sure how much faster is amd 350 over the ATOM, I think they are in the same class.

I'd take a cheap i3 laptop with no GPU any day.

What "way better laptop" can we get for $300 that has a decent keyboard and trackpoint and weighs 3 pounds?

nice machine

(cricket sounds)

Good deal OP

Well, we got the 11z for the same price but thats sold out now. I think Lenovo saw the demand and dropped this into the mix since the Dell deal. 11z is better but you obviously cant get it now, although they was a long wait for them to actually deliver the units. ******************But you're right, there are no other $300 mini-laptops out there really.******************* <- HTHelps reading retarded redboy.

edit: why the red? odd. and i thought i was wacky.

ps - the 11z aka 1121 (2nd version) had a better processor:

Already popping up on eBay at $400 and up. Newly listed today. A lot of people are going to flip these.

Good luck with that.. Let us know how many you flip.

Can someone confirm the hard drive speed? I'd consider getting one if it's 7200rpm. It shows 5400rpm on Lenovo's web site.

Processor kills it, really. The early i3 is twice as fast.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+E-350

e350 Scores: 728
i3-330um scores: 1205

Sorry!

This is just as an example on a deal. Not meaning to piss anyone off, just trying to help by comparing past deals on similar items.

There's always a faster/better unit, but the question is how much MORE are you willing to pay for that extra boost in performance?

Like i said, i'm comparing deals. Dell had the 11z version 1121 @ $300 a few weeks ago for the same price as this deal with a processor that is twice as fast. But the disk was smaller (250GB @5400rpm). With windows7 you're gonna need a good processor.. But this will probably get by, although i would hold out for something better personally, since we saw a better deal a few weeks ago. Intel's built in HD graphics is also better than the AMD one in this offering. Thumbs down on this deal; seen better. If the disk is 7200rpm, that obviously would be a plus point. Nothing to jump on, imo. Hold out if you can. But we might not see to many more laptops this size at this price. Who knows. That is worth thinking about.

For the hardcore thinkpad users, its the track point that makes this deal. I still find it hard to believe how I lived with only a track pad.

The i3-330um gets around a low 3 to 4 score for windows 7 with its self-testing "windows experience" program. Hate to think what the E350 would get.

turtoni said:   Like i said, i'm comparing deals. Dell had the 11z version 1121 @ $300 a few weeks ago for the same price as this deal with a processor that is twice as fast.By "a few weeks ago" you mean SIX weeks ago? Where's your deal on a time machine? Either Intel or Dell loses money putting a low voltage Arrandale into such a cheap machine (the i3-330UM is the same class as what the MacBook Air had a year ago), so you're unlikely to get anything better than AMD's E-series in a $300, 3lb machine.

Intel's built in HD graphics is also better than the AMD one in this offering. No, it's not. Sandy Bridge has faster graphics than Brazos, but 18W Arrandale does not. There's a reason that the Intel HD Graphics has a default clock of 166MHz instead of 500MHz. Intel isn't good at low power graphics.

Check the 3DMark scores here:

turtoni said:   The i3-330um gets around a low 3 to 4 score for windows 7 with its self-testing "windows experience" program. Hate to think what the E350 would get.See the reviews above. The i3-330UM wins the processor index 4.2 to 3.8, while the E-350 wins the aero and gaming indices by much larger margins (4.2 vs 3.6, and 5.6 vs 4.8).

You can hate on AMD all you want, but you can't change the facts. The E-350 is a very well balanced processor. What you lose in general processing you gain back in spades with power consumption, graphics, and price.

Not hating anything:

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+E-350

e350 Scores: 728
i3-330um scores: 1205

"This chart comparing CPU benchmarks is made using thousands of PerformanceTest benchmark results and is updated daily."

"In CPU bound titles the E-350 loses out to the mainstream i3, but is **competitive** with ultra low voltage i3s"

Not likely to be doing a whole lot of a gaming on a machine like this, imo. So really the i3 is better suited for this format since you'll be more likely to use "CPU bound titles".

I would consider windows7 for example, to be a "CPU bound title"..

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4023/the-brazos-performance-previe...

I have no brand loyalties: AMD or Intel, Nvidia or ATI, which ever works best. You on the other-hand..

Look buddy, I'm just correcting your misinformation. I already mentioned that it is slower at CPU tests, so I don't know why you're trying to convince me of that.

You said HD graphics are faster, but you're wrong. The i3-330m's graphics are about as fast as the old HD4200, and the E350's HD6310 is much faster. I already showed you the Windows 7 experience index, which the E350 wins.

Moreover, the i3-330M costs more. Yes, Dell was clearing them out before, but you can't get that now. Finally, the x120e has longer battery life and better build quality than the Dell.

(sorry for the thread necromancy, but whatever. It's only a week and nobody cares about Expired Deals )

You're wrong: do a search for Intel HD Vs AMD Radeon HD 6310 and you get:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6310.40952.0.html

Scroll down and click on the compare and see that the Intel HD is better on most game compares.

"Gaming performance should therefore be similar to a Nvidia ION or Intel HD Graphics graphics card." --notebookcheck.net

This is for the Intel HD (3000) which is in the 11z version 1121:
