Playbook is Android, although it's a special RIM flavor, where the apps have been vetted by RIM. (Of course you're free not to buy into the RIM ecosystem if you don't like the vetting.)

The playbook is actually running an OS based on the real-time operating system QNX, not android. RIM is planning to add support for android apps but wouldn't count on that working well for the foreseeable future.
