CPU load is the major reason why transfer rates stink, especially with NTFS.. You will notice a nice boost in speed if you use EXT3..
Hypnosis4u2nv, I am well aware of that. I've done quite a bit of testing already. So far, fat32 are ext3 are similar in speed, and both are much better than ntfs. And while we're at it, nfs is also faster than samba. What I'm curious about is causes of the drastic speed drop as soon as a file is sent out of (or into) the router from (or onto) the USB port. I think I need to try a newer kernel than the one Tomato uses, so I'll probably switch back to DD-WRT or move on to Openwrt for more testing.

I was unsure if you did try the EXT3 format.. If it wasn't for the 4GB file limit of FAT32, I would most likely be using that instead of EXT3.. And I won't disagree with you on NFS being faster than Samba, although I could never get it to run on my Pogoplug.. Let us know your results on your testing..

AP isolation: disable TX/RX Antennas: Auto Preamble: Long Shortslot Override: Auto TX Power: 71 Afterburner: disable Bluetooth coexistence: disable
TIA.
Try 40MHz only (since your only on N), RX Antenna = A, TX Antenna = B
I got a slightly better signal just changing the Antenna's from auto..

Sorry - it was a 40mhz only (I remembered the belkin original setting which was 20 or 20/40). I changed the antenna's to rx left and tx right and will see what happens. - TIA.
I have this set at n only, 40mhz, channel 11 and upper extension.
I also have another cheap Belkin set at channel 6 for my older g devices.
But the issue is that wifi analyzer and inssider both show both ap going up and down every couple of seconds. Also, devices show full bars, then half, and soon. Neighbors stay steady. Any ideas?
All 3 of my routers (1 DLink and 2 Belkins) signal jump up and down, including my neighbors.. I wouldn't worry much about it unless it jumps significantly in strength..
Hypnosis4u2nv said: buytech said: Your opinion - do you think I should pull the trigger for this router or go for something basic and if so, any suggestions? Thanks!
Your only paying a few bucks more for this router which offers much more than a basic router.. $22 is hardly going to break your wallet when you consider that is the total cost to get to your door, never-mind the free tech support on this thread! Thanks Hypnosis4u2nv for the convincing push. The deal seems to be dead now. Wish you had held Expansys in your trance a day longer. However, no regrets as I have gained invaluable knowledge in this thread. BTW, I just realized you are also the OP of this thread - 92 days old, 148780+ Views and 265+ Votes! Wow! Must be some record of sorts here at FW!
ct99 said: You're welcome once again. Since you're so grateful and appreciative, am I obligated to help from now on? Just kidding! Seriously, I've benefited much from this and other forums in the past. Just doing my part to past on the knowledge. And while we are at it, I think Hypnosis4u2nv deserves a lot of credit for this thread. He not only posted a hot deal that's 3 months and going, but he's also been maintaining it by answering questions from newcomers. Thanks, Hypnosis4u2nv! (And buytech, if you "envy" me for my help, perhaps you've been "hypnotized." )
With pleasantry out of the way... 1) From here, 14R N4010 has Dell Wireless 1501. From here, 1501 is a 2.4GHz-band-only adapter with a 1T1R antenna. So if the laptop can't use it, there's no need to waste money on a dual-band router. 2) There was a simpler time (probably before prevalence of P2P and hacking) when schools didn't have to restrict and monitor students' net use. So forget this idea, since net access is checked individually.
Since I did a quick search, I might as well pass this along... here. Most US devices only support channels 1-11, but channels 12 and 13 are actually permitted under low-power conditions. So if channel 11 is not heavily occupied, channel 13 may be a possibility. If you don't understand any of this, don't worry and just ignore this comment. But if she experiences connectivity issues, this may be worth looking into.
As for my opinion, I agree with Hypnosis4u2nv. It's hard to beat this deal. The two USB ports are especially nice, as she can hook up a printer for wireless printing and external storage for data backup. Plus, TomatoUSB is a very nice option. But take what I've said as an opinion, not as an advice. I am not a typical user, so I can't say there isn't a better option for a less tech-savvy person at his/her price range. Ct99 thanks again for the response and taking the trouble to find info on my laptop’s adapter. I was being grateful and appreciative because I really meant it and I can know form your postings you don’t need to be obligated to be helpful. (Yeah,I know you were only kidding)
Thanks for the channel support pointer. I will now know what to do in case there are connectivity issues.
The deal seems to be dead but I am happy I have gained so much here that I am now better equipped to choose another router, or may be, wait for Hypnosis4u2nv to put Expansys under his hypnotic spell once again!
Not sure if people still care to check the thread now, so I'll just make it short...
@buytech Hypnosis4u2nv posted a link where you can buy from third-party Amazon sellers for a few bucks more. You can also find it on eBay. There'll probably be other deals if you decide to hold off. Either way, good luck.
@Hypnosis4u2nv FAT32 has too many limitations to be useful these days. I was hoping to check out exFAT and ext4, but I may need to wait until I can get Openwrt going.
@rsuaver My guess is it's an interference issue. You can try channel 13 to test. Change to 20MHz, channel 13, and low TX power like 10mW. You need to set regulatory domain to 13 channels on your Android also. Observe whether the signal is stable next to the router. If it is, slowly increase TX power (by 5mW at a time, say) so that you can barely get a decent signal (say, high yellow in wifi analyzer) at a corner of your house. If it's still stable enough, try going back to the channel you wanted to use, channel 11. If the signal remains stable, you can try boosting the signal a bit to get more range. Don't go overboard. If the signal fluctuates again, then perhaps you should try another channel. Another note: your G on channel 6 overlaps your N at 40MHz on any channel. N devices will normally drop back to 20MHz automatically. Put G on channel 1 if possible. If you can't reliably get 40MHz, you might as well try a speed test with 40MHz and 20MHz. Some people in that situation report getting the same or slightly higher throughput with 20MHz setting.

Deal may be dead, but I am sure most of the helpful people who have been lurking around for the 3 months this deal was active will continue to lend a helping hand to those who run into problems with this particular router.. Plus the thread is full of information that would help someone who does purchase the router elsewhere..
Let us know how the EXT4 and OpenWRT works out for you!
How to compare this router to Belkin Play HD Dual Band Wireless N Router (N600)? Belkin Play HD N600 Router is on sale on 1SaleADay.com (7/10/2012) for $24.99 + $4.99 shipping. A few bucks more, but faster than N300.

great find. this should be interesting since it's only live for 22 more hours.

great find. this should be interesting since it's only live for 22 more hours. Yep, great find. One thing to note however for those who haven't purchased from 1SaleADay is they may take upwards of 10 days or more to ship the product.
I have a mix of n and g laptops- do I correctly understand that a single-band (albeit dual antenna) router like the N300 will get limited to the slower connection speed? Thanks.

Ideally you want to have your G and N devices separated since the N devices will drop down to G speeds whenever G devices are in use..
Engineer said: Keep in mind that the N600 isn't Tomato compatible and I'm not sure that it's DD-WRT compatible so you're stuck with stock (IIRC).
From what I've read it is DD-WRT compatible. I need something better than the crappy Linksys I have no, the speeds flucuate all over the place and it's really not even usable for wireless. Thinking about trying the N600 from 1SaleADay.

Looks like both DD-WRT and Tomato work on the N600 @ both 2.4 and 5GHz. Not sure if Dual Band or not with DD-WRT or Tomato (should be). Damn, now I'm tempted to get one of the N600's too, lol. I think I'll hold out for an 802.11AC Tomato compatible router!
I know I'm probably close to threadcrapping, but how much better would you guys think the N300 or N600 would be over my old Linksys WRT54G-TM that I loaded dd-wrt on several years ago? Would I be able to use it for my A/B/G devices and the N300/N600 for the N devices? I didn't jump on the N300 when this deal popped up originally, but I did make the thread sticky and read it for quite a while. Came back to it today and saw the N600 deal. Now I'm tempted again to pull the trigger.

It is amazing how they seem to be dumping all of these routers. I bought one of the N300's from Expansys and did the whole dd wrt thing - fantastic. And then I saw an N750 db for $30 at the local Goodwill and picked it up. The lady there said it came straight from Target. Haven't hooked it up yet. Anyone know if it can be flashed with alternative firmware?

I wouldn't worry about what their website says, just trust that they are all gigabit ports.. Hell, they even put up the wrong firmware for the N300 so I would take what they post on their site with a grain of salt..

The 3302 is listed with 10/100 LAN ports on the site you link. The 7302 is listed on the site from the OP as having Gigabit lan ports. Hmmmm?

Expansys is wrong.. Manual from Belkin shows the F7D7302 has 100/10 ports..
