First, buy a Nokia Lumia 900 smartphone from AmazonWireless for anywhere from $20 to $50 depending on your current contract status (see http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1183633/ for details).
you could sell your old phone unlocked on eBay before it fully depreciates to make of the difference.

The conclusion of the article is based on one fact: the number of apps - but the question is, does it make a difference for any single user - 1 million apps or 100,000 apps? I doubt anyone has more than 100 apps on one phone. What matter is the quality of apps. WP 7 has pretty much most of the popular apps. Microsoft's real problem is that it's too late. Mnay people may not feel comfortable to learn new things. But price is a big selling point.

It will never been late for anything. It is late when you are no ever pursuit it. I already got used to Android phone but I would give WP a trial to see whether I like it or not (why not, free phone from microsoft)
I believe Microsoft does the right thing to give away phone to attract people (especially those are with low-end smartphone) rather than just advertising and marketing.

I called AT&T again - it doesn't matter where you purchased the phone, $100 should be valid. The phone is very pretty. The interface is trendy and intuitive and doesn't look busy or feel like a "computer". The screen size is perfect. I really like the on screen keyboard, small but it makes no mistakes - much better than iOS. The overall resolution is acceptable, same like the many Android phones but not as sharp as iPhone 4, especially the internet page rendering can look ugly when it first opens. Still playing with it before I settle down.
The raw number of apps is just a fantasy figure. You try 10 new apps each day, it would take you 136 years to go through 500,000 of them. The most popular apps are usually available across all three platforms anyway. Even for those exceptions that's Apple only or Andriod only, you can easily find replacement to satisfy the exact same function.

I too find the number of apps a retarded metric. By that standard, why buy apple OS (for computers) at all? There are not nearly as many "apps" available for OSX, and if anyone wants to argue dual booting, why go through the trouble when a SUPREMELY good windows machine could be had for the same price as apple machine, and a decent one for much less...
But back to the apps thing. In the future, sure, I might need a million fart apps for when I get bored of the first 999,999 variants. On a day to day basis though, I use maybe a dozen different things (on my computer or phone). Therefore, if the phone supports those dozen or so uses I use 99.99% of the time, I could really care less which OS/eco-system has more of it.

Some people use their phones to waste time. Going through hundreds of thousands of apps is time wasting. Most people only use 10 external apps or so.
By the way, the LIVE TILES on the LUMIA will have you mesmerized, especially if you have large circle of friends.
I have the Samsung Focus, the OLED on that phone along with the butter smooth scrolling will drive you crazy...it is just an aweomse device...Lumia 900 does feel solid and has a bigger screen plus the body is sexy....AFA the OS is concerned, the live tiles for people and groups will simply make you keep staring at the phone...I agree with whodini above....
Microsoft has entered markets late before and been the underdog, but its power and money have helped it overcome this several times. Just ask the people from WordPerfect, Novell, and Sony. All number one and well established in the market MS entered - word processing, retail server software, and console gaming. Now who is number one? It will take 2 - 3 years at least, with some of that depending on how Windows 8 does, but they will probably be number one in smartphones as well unless they really screw something up. Apple will be number 3, and Android will be number 2. Once MS gets established, I am sure they will start to take the remaining enterprise market away from RIM.

This phone has mediocre hardware, so you're getting what you pay for. Also, the IE browser in the phone is getting really bad reviews.

only thing i hate about this phone is its not as vivid as the iphone, the camera is not so good(i thought the carl zeiss lens would be better then the iphone), and only way to unlock the phone is on the side but other then that the software is amazing compared to ios and android
I don't think I've ever seen a phone with five star reviews like this one has! I'm due for an upgrade so I just ordered it and can't wait to see it in person! Thanks so much for posting this, OP!

The power button location messed with me for a while too, but then I got it: it falls exactly under your finger if you hold the phone in your left hand. If you are a righty it makes perfect sense. Phone comes out of left pocket, finger is exactly placed to press power, and you are off and typing with your right hand.

Is this one of those that you must have data plan? I just got the new HTC Titan and used it with my existing AT&T Sim card, so far, I do not see Data plan is being added to my plan with this HTC, but once before I used an iPhone (to test) with my Sim card and AT&T immediately recognized and added Data plan. Do they have a list of phones that require Data plan?
