Sorry, pre-flood I paid $79.99 regularly for 2TB drives... It's getting better, yes, but lets not spread mis-information here as the price decline has stalled at around this price for a while now.. Maybe because people are buying at this price...

One of my Synology NAS drives has SMART failures so I need a 2TB asap. Nice deal for the times OP, thanks. And when I added it to my cart and checked out it dropped to $99.99!

pre-flood was $60 AR, sometimes even $50 for the 2TB. However, i could be certain that was for mostly 2TB 5400rpm so this could be alright. still, it would have been $40 for 2TB if not for the flood... oh how that would have changed so much things in what i got last year.

That is true and agree with you, but I believe it was a Maximum PC article noted that now being down to 3? (Seagate, WD, Hitachi) major makers of HDDs, they planned to use the flood to set a higher "base" for their drives b/c it was cannibalizing the bottom-line...now with fewer players, they can much more easily collude (nah..HDD companies wouldn't do that). So, you may be able to snag a Memorial Day weekend deal for cheaper...maybe...if you don't have to buy today.
I'd like to buy @ $100(or less), but I'll think it over for the day and see if I will jump on this deal. Not overly bad seeing as I paid $200 for my first 2TB drive a couple-ish years back.
The real worry here is the QUALITY of the drives... whether the factories in Red China have managed to figure out how to build these and make them work. When Seagate moved production from Singapore to mainland Red China, quality went in the toilet.
Looking at the Amazon STAR ratings, things don't look all that great. 42 five-STAR ratings and 23 one-STAR ratings.
And it may be significant that this 7200.14 line has only a ONE YEAR warranty!
This is also a 4K sector drive, which is a good thing, but perhaps not without problems in older PCs and NAS boxes.

Five years was typical, then it dropped to 3yrs, and now I've been seeing more 1-2yrs and I simply refuse to buy anything less than 3.
WD for $10 more... This WD has a 2-year warranty while the Seagate has only a 1-year warranty.

No expiration date is mentioned on the page at the moment.
Keep in mind both internal and external drives are 1-year warranty. HDD manufacturers have been scaling back warranty coverage and quality/longevity has been coming down right along with it. I try to buy drives with 2 or 3 year warranties OR have a rock solid storage back-up strategy.

Fortunately, SSD price are falling. A lot of people can live with 120GB SSD which is about the same price. Sure, you can't store your blu-ray rips. But not everyone need to do so. Screw the HDD makers...

The price of SSD drives are definitely getting better, but unfortunately most people today can not live with a 120gb drive. *shudder* Just thinking about giving up my meticulously stored HD rips of movies, cartoons, tv, and porn spanning my nearly 9tb of space makes me a bit queasy. Those rips aside most people today store home video, massive amounts of pictures, more music than some jukeboxes, and a few games on their pc at any given time. 120gb alone is not enough to store these things, but they are beautiful for speeding up your OS, editing software, and games whilst leaving your long term storage where it still should be, in a larger spindle device such as one of these 2tb HDD's.
I just recently added a 1.5tb to my grandmothers (late 70's) PC as her 750GB drive was filled to the brim, and she has a 60gb ssd on top of that... If she can fill her storage with that much digital content I am quite sure most younger people will as well.
As chip density increases in the next line of toggle and ONFi chips we will probably see ssd drives dropping to ~ 50c a gb and have much larger capacity making them a more viable solution, until then though most will need a supplementary HDD for their content.

What Synology do you have? I'm looking at the DS212J with two of these 2TB' drives and a Raid 0 array...any thoughts? Somehow the DS211J's are more expensive?? Are they better?

Hope you have everything backed up, running raid 0 offer ZERO redundancy. One of the disks goes bad then bye bye data. Raid 1 offers redundancy.

You don't have to give up your movies, etc.
Best compromise is a SSD as your main drive in the PC, and a decent 1 or 2 TB hard drive as secondary.
And then two more hard drives in a NAS box (like the XyZEL in these pages) set to RAID 1 (and NEVER to RAID 0) as backup/near-line storage.
Only a fool has only one copy of important things like documents, digital photos, etc.

Go with the DS411J. Even if you only put two drives in it, it will give you some more space to implement a raid 5 later on. RAID 1 is just too inefficient. With the DS411J you could put in the two drives and get 1TB of storage. If you added another 1 TB drive later and switch to RAID 5 you would get 2TB of storage. To do the same thing on the DS2XXX you would have to replace both drives with a 2TB drive to get 2TB. RAID 1 gets very expensive to upgrade size. A little extra money upfront on the enclosure will pay dividends later.
