Concur on lackluster reviews, but to not buy this b/c on lack of HDMI is like making excuses.

I don't need excuses not to buy this PC, but on top of lackluster performance, I choose not to buy a new PC without HDMI. I would be willing to deal with HP's tireless promotion of DisplayPort, but this model doesn't even have that, and I don't want to mess with Hong Kong adapters or add video cards simply for HDMI.

If you are aware of better deal at $299.99, then please share it with us. For $299.99, you get what you pay for... basic PC.

Two things:
I think it's understood that for your desires/preferences, this is not an extraordinary value without an HDMI port but posting that opinion to the thread does not necessarily apply to the majority so many might wonder why one would feel compelled to post it in the first place. We've now got 5 entries in this thread including mine debating whether or not the lack of an HDMI port "kills this deal". Let people form their own opinion.
For the poor reviews mentioned previously, the reviews on the Staples product page show 4.3/5 stars from 140 reviews. That sounds like pretty darn good reviews to me. Taking a quick read at CompReviews as you've linked above, what I take from the explanation around their 3/5 stars is primarily that it's only negatives are installed software and lack of connections like HDMI (and possibly others like PCIe, SATA and whatnot) but reading that article, I think the text of the article better suits it's readers so they know what they're getting for their money. I wouldn't put too much stock in the 3/5 starts since they did not necessarily state anything negative other than the above and when 140 Staples customers give it 4.3/5 stars I'd say that's not a bad product.
I'm just sayin...

It's certainly not the only consideration, but HDMI holds value for me in a PC purchase. Others will feel it is not important. When my opinion was challenged, I explained myself. I didn't insist others must have HDMI. Either opinion is valid, which is why I said lackluster performance plus the lack of HDMI "kills it for me."
I don't generally put much faith in the typical Staples, Best Buy, WalMart, etc. customer review. That said, the Staples reviews are pretty decent.
No, I'm not aware of a better deal at $299.99. If all you want is a basic PC and all you have to spend is $299.99, I guess this is your only option.
When I have bought cheap PCs in the past, I have almost always been disappointed with their long-term value. A little bit more sometimes goes a long way.
PERSONALLY, based on the crappy performance I got out of the last $300 HP desktop I bought from Staples, I choose to stay away from this one. No need for others to try and convince me otherwise. If you decide this PC fits your needs, I wish you many years of happiness with your decision.

Also, I wonder why desktops do not include an HDMI on many. During mfg it would be only a few bucks to do... And the one here is not a bottom of the line model.

no, none do, unless they release a special computer specific coupon valid on this model.

I work for HP as tech support. I think this is cheaper than my emplyee discount, lol. And not a bad deal if you buy it for everyday normal use other than playing games... Just my 2 cents...

I'm glad you mentioned the HDMI, because I also see it does't have any USB 3.0 or an extra hard drive bay (from what I can tell). It has a secondary drive bay if you wanted to add blu-ray in the future, however I can't find out the power wattage?
Now before I get jumped on: I'm posting to be helpful in case anyone had the same questions about expandability, NOT because I don't feel it is worth $299.99...

Why would anyone buy a dual-core (2 threaded) computer in this day and age? This is the bottom of the barrel. I would personally avoid. For the same money, you could build a nice mini-ITX rig, and instead of a 1TB mechanical drive, get a 60/90/120GB SSD. (Prices are plummeting on SSDs lately.)
Better user experience, you could hook it up to a big-screen TV, and it would take up less space.
They say desktops are dying, and for good reason. Unless you need major horsepower in your computer (3D Modeler, hardcore Gamer), then you would be better off with a SFF or a laptop. (But laptops have small screens. I like a nice big screen.)
No HDMI on a machine in 2012, just screams, "I'm too cheap, don't buy me".
