Bang. In for this. Don't know why FW shows it expired. I was able to order no prob. It would not let me use the MAY15 code until I added a filler so I put in the $3.99 Tote and then it took off $15. Since many commented the cargo box is not waterproof then the tote may come in handy. The darn cross bars set me back another $80 and those were the cheapest ones on Amazon rated to hold 150lbs.

I wonder how Sears is about price adjustments? I missed the May15 code.

Couldn't you just add some weather stripping? I'm not sure how this could be that hard.
BTW, in for 1 and it is pretty big.
Thanks OP

Neither are Thule or Yak...but I have never had mine leak (Thule). It would take some serious wind/rain due to the design for it to leak.

15 cubic ft rain-proof bag is half price. What's the consensus on why this is better? Once your trip is done you have to store the thing somewhere. If you're taking a one way trip is the opinion that a bag would be better?

I imagine people buy this thinking they will use it multiple times.

FYI - The dropdown menu on ebates shows 7% but once you click on it, it changes to 4% CashBack.

I've been waiting for this one-- great deal. What disturbs me is the extra installation stuff that may be required. I looked over the owner's manual pdf that you can download, and it hardly clears it up. U-bolts? Railing racks? And my car is conveniently not listed.

I have an older version of this. Picked it up at a yard sale for $25 and paid to have a new key cut for $25 from a local locksmith shop. Great unit. Have used it in the rain and did not notice any major leaking. It mounts to the roof rack with bolts and a bracket. the bracket is slotted on one end to allow for it to slide over the bolt end for easy install. The bolts tighten on the inside with hand turn nuts for a tool less install.
As I recall, mine was manufactured by Thule, they just did not carry the key I needed.
In fact just lent it to a neighbor. Holds a ton of stuff.

Hard to say how much of a water issue there really is w/ this. More than one of the reviewers reports good experience w/ this in pretty bad rain, while another laments that it isn't waterproof.

I had a Thule "rain proof" bag and it was terrible. Leaked like crazy. I picked up an older version of this Sears topper at a garage sale and it is much better about keeping the weather out. I wouldn't call it "waterproof" but it's pretty good, and I wouldn't trust a bag again. Just my experience though!

I hope it's a small dog... I would imagine anything larger than a lab would be uncomfortable on long trips. Probably easier to just hook them to the bumper...

One alternative to consider is the hitch mounted cargo carrier. Then you can put a cargo bag on them. The bonus is that you do not get the drag from the top mounted carriers so your gas mileage should be better. You also don't have the extra height when pulling into a garage. However, some hitch mounted cargo carriers block your rear door/hatch.
I planned on using both the past two trips but was able to get everything into the hitch mounted cargo carrier.

I gotta think you can't get 20cu ft in a hitch carrier.

I have a compact crossover and I considered one of these to increase my cargo space for when I go on camping trips but after evaluating my use, I realize that I need my roof free for my kayak carriers, so that really only left me with a hitch carrier. Unfortunately, the tongue weight for my vehicle/hitch was not much, so that ruled out a hitch carrier as well.
IIRC, rule of thumb to calculate load at hitch is to take rating and divide it by the distance (in feet). So if you have a tongue weight rating of 150lbs and you put a hitch carrier on that puts your items at ~ 2 feet from the hitch, the hitch will support 150 / 2 = 75lbs. That is for both the weight of the carrier AND the items which was barely anything. Most affordable carriers are made of heavier steel, you gotta pony up some extra $$$ to get a lighter aluminum one.
So I agree with the comment that a hitch carrier may be a better option but please consider your vehicle / hitch rating to see if it's a viable option. Another interesting route is to use a wheeled trailer: http://kawanow.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=prin... (However, you could probably carry more with just a regular open trailer and a cover, bungee cords, etc). If you're tongue weight limited, a hitch carrier won't work and you would be a lot safer pulling a small trailer, more money but here's an example (have to add plywood for floor, sides, top, etc) Text
Also, another thing to note is that not all roof racks are rated for 150lbs, they vary from vehicle to vehicle, some more, some less. I could not find the weight of this car top carrier but that will add to your maximum weight. Not trying to sway, but just wanted to make sure people loaded these safely.

OK.. I blindly bought it in the afternoon looking at 4.5 star rating from 300+ people. Mostly everybody has rated it 5 stars, however some did report about leak issues. So I decided to go pick it up. Following were the findings 1. The "skin" of this box is very thin/flimsy to make it light weight. But so is it with other carriers as well. Per the reviews, it seems to be stable and sturdy though 2. Max ht. of this box is approx. 20.25 inch. and lot of people have reported/complained about their parking experience in their own garage or public parking garage. If you plan on not taking it off from the SUV while parked in garage, make sure to measure the clearance between the roof rails and garage door when it slides up.
Its a good deal for half the price. Green for OP

I hate Sears. They claim it was price mistake. Shows in cart for 109 but at checkout switches to 199.
