Same here. Not my favorite lens in this range, but $599 would be a good price.

I have this lens (Sony mount). It is an excellent lens, and (according to various web lab reviews) the optics are better than anything else in that general area, probably because the zoom range is not that big (usually the competitors are around 2x zoom, e.g. 10-20). The almighty Ken Rockwell loves it and claims it is the best ultrawide zoom in the world..
It is very wide, very linear, which means very little fish-eye distortion, so people come out very well. (obviously, if you like fish-eye effects, this is not for you).
And a surprising advantage: even though it is an APS size, at 16mm (and maybe even at 15mm) it covers full frame!
