Obviously..since it's NIB from a "normal" retail merchant (unless noted)...it comes with the factory warranty.

I don't know how all these tabs really stack up, but I got the $139 Kindle Fire a few months back, and I love it. I'm running MoDaCo ROM on there (ICS), and it is a really slick little tablet.

Obviously..since it's NIB from a "normal" retail merchant (unless noted)...it comes with the factory warranty. I don't have experience with getting warranty service for fleabay purchases but I suspect that most manufacturers view fleabay purchases with some suspicion and getting warranty service for such purchases may not be so automatic. There is definitely nothing obvious about it. In fact, note that the listing is very detailed but specifically omits mention of a warranty even while offering an option to purchase one extra. The omission may not be a mistake and may be one reason why the price is so low. Even though the seller is Barnes and Noble itself, I would not assume that this comes with a standard warranty.
FutureDilemma said: I don't have experience with getting warranty service for fleabay purchases.
Well..you might not have much experience with eBay purchases through big companies..but I do.
Most of the time..they send a regular looking invoice with the product anyway (same layout as you would get if you ordered from their websites).
Either way...if you're so worried about it..just go with the squaretrade warranty so you can move on to the next deal.

Out of the box, no, the Nook Color doesn't allow the full android market. However, if you root the device, it's one heck of a little tablet. About the only thing I haven't done on mine is actually read a book.

1) More Memory ( get any Class 4 Sandisk Card, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB.)
2) You have a Pure Android tablet, without the Nook content directed skin. You can use any app / widget on Android market - or Amazon Market. It's the biggest no brainer out there. And you don't even have to touch the internal files of the device if you just want to run off a SD card ( just make you choose that ROM version from development forum ).
3) You can still use Nook app if you want for Nook content.
I'm still running CM7 ( Android 2.3 ) off SD card boot from HERE
But if you want the ICS experience ( Android 4.0), you can try one of the other variations of ICS from Development Forum
Just make sure you choose the proper ROM install, depending on if you want to boot from internal or External Memory when you're installing on your device.
note that the refurb is new as per feedback from various buyers
How does the Acer tablet blow it out of the water? The only real difference I can see between the two in practical use is that the Nook has more than DOUBLE the battery life of the Acer? Only 4.5 hours compared to 9-10 hours is a substantial advantage....to the Nook.

Go to www.xda-developers.com and look up the Nook Color. Rooting the Nook changes it from being a rather shackled e-reader to potentially being a full-fledged tablet PC. Sure, there's no camera, 3G, or GPS. However, it'll run flash, you can install any number of different web browsers, you can easily shop for apps at Google's Android Marketplace or you can easily install the Amazon Android Market app. Amazon gives away a different free app every day.
Best of all, it's next to impossible to "brick" a Nook Color. Similar to shaking an etch-a-sketch, you can always set a Nook Color back to factory default if you screw it up. XDA-Developers has answers to all of the questions you might have.

Since SupTech so kindly asked the Acer thread to share the joy of Acer, here it comes:
The screen is probably the only advantage Nook tablet has over Acer A100. On the other hand, the Acer A100 has a GPS, two cameras, ICS without rooting, HDMI out, better speakers/sound. Not sure if Nook tablet has Bluetooth, Acer does.
Anyways, as you may see from my comments in the Acer threat about the 'screen feature' (privacy feature or narrow viewing angle issue) you need to see this screen at a store before you make up your mind. I was planning to use it in the car almost all the time, so the screen is my only complaint. Other than that, this thing is fast and full of great features.

You know a great option, if you aren't heavily into the Android Marketplace, look at a Blackberry Playbook. Great screen, all the bell and whistles GPS etc. The best browser out there, some free games HDMI out with no hiccups doing 1080p to a big screen.

Ugh, I don't know about that one. I still have a Nokia N800 in the basement as a reminder of a dead mobile platform. I would rather stick to the Android apps. Nook Tablet, Acer A100, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Kindle Fire provide plenty of choices in the around $200 7" tablet market.

Ummm no While HP's tablet firesale was ...interesting .. most companies do NOT sell their toys below cost.
Don't you guys know Google is coming out with 7 inch tablet this summer for $199....for $50 more you will get faster processor, camera, gps, Android 4.0, etc....why go through hassle of rooting this outdated book reader? I am willing to wait 3 months and buy Google tablet to get a full experience with the latest technology.

We all know there will be something better in the future. But we may choose to buy this now, use it, learn it, benefit from it, and then pass it down a few months from now to a spouse or child, or sell it to a non-early-adopter type person. The benefit of buying something at Fatwallet-type pricing is you can often get your money back after using something for awhile, if your timing is good.

Do you actually think the Google 7" tablet will be out by July? Its been delayed for 3 months and who knows what the final specs will be.
Your guess is as good as mine if it will include a quad-core chip or that it will even be manufactured by Asus (possibly Samsung?). Plus, I'm guessing the price will be closer to $249 after all is said and done.

No official words on the release date and price. But my guess is that it will be out by August before school starts again. Price will be $199 to compete with Amazon Fire.
Yes, ASUS has confirmed that Google Tablet will use a quad-core chip Nook will be outdated when Google tablet comes out.

UPDATE: The Wall Street Journal reported on 5/16 that its sources claim Google plans to sell Nexus-branded smartphones and tablets from as many five different suppliers. The new devices will run on new software, Android 5.0, due out later this year, and Google's goal is to have them available for sale by this November.

My rooted Nook Color doesn't run some Google Play apps, like SiriusXM, HBO GO, and YouTube HD files. Many other tablets (except for the iPad) have trouble with these apps too.
I've read that the Google Tablet should be around $150.
I made a few notes: Kindle Fire - not expandable Nook Color and Nook Tablet - expandable Acer Iconia A100 - expandable, ICS, dual cameras, GPS, bluetooth, HDMI, better speakers than KF/NT, bad vertical viewing angle Galaxy Tab 2 - expandable, best screen?, ICS, dual cameras, bluetooth, (how are speakers?) I don't really get the Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy Tab 2 thing.

Look. The nook was designed and targeted as an ebook reader 1st, everything else second to that. It's not like a Thrive or Galaxy that were designed as multimedia and communication devices. Thus, no camera, Bluetooth, etc - but, at a lower price point. You can go even cheaper to sub-$100 tablets at BigLots for color e-readers, but screens aren't as nice. For a iPad-quality screen with better anti-glare as a book reader, this is the best at this price point. higher up? Thrive or galaxy in 7 or 10 inch sizes. Really top notch screens, connectivity, stability, speed. Le Pan 2 for those willing to roll the dice on reliability, but very good 10 inch screen for $279. Pretty much, basics of mp3, video, web, reading, tube, etc work fine and speedy enough for the price point. Obviously, no rush- xmas will likely have same or lower price as a new model will likely arrive.

And yes, might not have 4.0 or 5.0 out later this year, but that's the fact with anything Google-no upgrade support for older tablets really...unlike Apple where at least three generations are supported on the latest OS.
That said, what 'normal' useful app isn't available? Not much is excluded and you really do get a broad range of apps at the current os ver supported.
Only system i can think of where backwards compatibility is awesome is windows. No problem running dos stuff under windows 7, or win7 on most decade old systems.

http://www.frys.com/product/7069271 Case in point-even the basic 10" 1024x768 tablets are $99.
Now wondering if I should cancel my Nook order for a better ebook experience (you can see a lot more without scrolling on a 1024x768 vs nook 1024x600).

Just got it. Thank ups for leaving it at the front door with out any thought to ringing the doorbell or package signing. Just dropped it of right in front of the door. Off to B&N to activate it-sadly, unhacked, it can't tether like all my other devices to my phone in adhoc mode. Stupid Android! Naturally, while I was there, right after activation, turned the nook off (to prevent accidental fw updates-1.42 as shipped), and grabbed cm7 for sd from the xda nook tablet forums on the phone. Back home, playing with it more, probably the only big difference is the low quality home button N and the slower response vs an ipad. But not that bad and worth the smaller, lighter form factor for now... Will have to see how easy it takes media, cm7, update blocking, etc this week.
