No worries, they will jack up the price after the first year... After 60 days you could transfer to Namecheap and use the BYEBYEGD coupon to extend that by another year, and move to a NON-SOPA/PIPA supporting registrar to boot. They are counting on your keeping your domain with them beyond the first year to recoup this loss leader of a price.

Actually, if you play the coupon game (which is what FW is all about), you can keep prices down. I've had a dozen domains at GD for a decade or more, and have never paid more than a few bucks each for registration or renewal. I posted below the OP that THIS PARTICULAR code didn't work on renewal... but many do, and every time I see one, I try it out. I have all my domains on NON-auto-renew, so I don't get stiffed with $12.xx/year fees from them. As for SOPA/PIPA, we get it... you're mad at them. Are you mad at the 1500 other companies that support it?

This is just such a chance, as every domain registered at this discounted price and transferred away before renewal will actually cost GD around $4.25.
Generally deals like this one include transfers from other registrars as well as new registrations, so you can register at a discount, transfer at a discount to another registrar, then transfer it back to GD at another steep discount (like this one), transfer back out at a discount to another registrar, and so on... Using this method, you can keep your domains renewed for years and years, at (I am guessing) steeper discounts than GDs typical renewal discounts, and all while NOT supporting GD. In fact, each iteration of the above plan actually costs them money. I don't support their business, I see steep discounts, and I put their money in my pocket to boot. It is a frugality trifecta, and THAT is what FW is all about!

We're in agreement. Just that I have done it (thus far) without having to transfer back and forth.

Except your screwing the other registrar you are transferring back and forth from.

While I couldn't care less about his SOAP/PITA views If they allow you to transfer without penalty and transfer back later, you're not screwing anybody. That's the way the system works. If these companies don't want it to happen, they'll put things in place to make it not happen.

I distain GD more than most people (mostly because of the elephant killing incident), but they no longer support SOPA, because they "listened to their customer".

Was able to get a dot.com domain name and a dot.info name for free - all for $1.49 plus fees, which came out to $1.85

Thanks OP. Great for a one time site to oust sitting politicians. They are destroying our country and need to go. If they're in, they're out. Hope and Change.
