In the Friday 5/25 Fry's newspaper ad, they list the Maxx for $99.99 ad pdf. The ad says "in store only" and "for new and upgrade Verizon customers". It's one of those flyer-only deals (if it's true and not an ad error). This price may be a sign of what's to come as this model nears replacement by the Razr HD?

You will lose it regardless. Upgrading to a 4G phone now will not save your grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan. You will still have it short term, but on your NEXT device (1 year?) you will be forced to change into a tiered data plan.

I picked one up. It was $99 plus a $25 Frys gift card plus a $40 bill credit. Lots of fees with a new account but it's still a major difference from buying it anywhere else. The way I see it it's at LEAST $65 less on this deal than anywhere else. Typical going price is more than $99. Lowest anywhere I found right now is $150 at AmazonWireless.

Sign a 2 year contract under unlimited data, at least they cannot change the terms of your contract while it is active.

The $40 bill credit was being offered until 5/24 but this sale started 5/25. How could Fry's give you a bill credit that's expired?

Exactly, but on your NEXT upgrade they will force you to select a new plan. Most people upgrade annually because they want the newest phone. IF you wait two years, 3 Years, even 4 years to upgrade, once you change devices, you will be forced into a tiered data plan.

You could buy unsubsidized and avoid a new contract. Not very wallet friendly, but if you must keep unlimited that's the way.

This is true, but unless you are downloading torrents no very "wallet friendly" at all as you put it. Maybe if folks raise enough hell about it, they will back off this policy change. Verizon Petition

Buy a Maxx full price and then what? Verizon's no-contract plan is not for smartphones or any of their top phones. You can't just bring any CDMA phone in from off the street either. I don't know of any carrier that you can bring a Maxx to to get a no-contract unlimited plan, included T-Mobile and Straight Talk. That's probably because the Maxx isn't a GSM phone.

Does this work if you are currently on 3G and buy an unsubsidized phone that is 4G????

I researched and purchased all yesterday. Many of the sites referenced the $40 credit. Many sellers use the same seller partner which I think includes Frys, Newegg, Sams Club, and WalMart all It's possible their partner was listing it incorrectly on the site. Fry's didn't say that but the salesperson in the store mentioned it so I wasn't expecting it. I wasn't expecting the $25 gift card either which I have in-hand. As you all know the $99 price is in-store only and it's the best deal I have yet to see on this phone.

If you are currently on an unlimited data plan, upgrading to a 4G phone through Verizon will not change your data plan....yet. Any upgrade after the summer will.

Was this $99+ taxes on $699.99 = ~160? Then $25 gift card = $135 Then $30 upgrade fee minus the $40 bill credit = $145 ish?
I'm wondering if it's worth the drive to get 2 of these for the family when the nearest Frys is about 40 mins away or just go to Costco (5 mins away) and get the regular Razr + dock+ battery pack+ HDMI cable + holster+ case+ 2 screen protectors for about $160.
Or are there any stores that will PM Frys? Even if they're 30 miles away?
Thanks! =]

I stopped in Fry's today 5/27. They somehow have in fact extended the $40 bill credit until Monday. I definitely wouldn't settle for the standard Razr unless you don't mind recharging every 6 hours like the other phones.
I'm tempted to wait and see if Sam's Club, amazonwireless, or Wirefly drop their price since they don't charge tax on the *retail price*.

Thanks for the reply, ron111. So it would be around $160 (with tax) + $30 upgrade fee = $190?
For me, it seems like the regular Razr from Costco might be the way to go, considering I usually have a charger with me (another plus is Costco's battery pack they throw in as a bonus).
Thanks again!

Wow...a lot of bad info in this thread. jtroye32 has it right - You can buy an unsubsidized VZW CDMA as an upgrade and self-activate it on your account...Just input the #'s for 3G or swap the SIM over (4G) and self-activate. You've been able to activate your own devices (and switch devices via IMEI) for some time...it doesn't mean you're on a "no-contract" or "pre-paid" plan. It means you're not renewing your contract through them and you're not bound by the ETF.
As for it working with 3G and going up to 4G, you'll need a SIM card for the LTE device, so you'd have to get that from the store and they may try change your plan then. As of now, the safest thing to do if you're on a 3G device and eligible for upgrade is to go to 4G (to get the SIM) before data share in implemented then just get new devices sans subsidy.

I just got back from the local Fry's and it's true afterall that the $40 bill credit is still running (extended) but only until tomorrow. Also the phone is sold out here and no rainchecks.
