"Ooma Telo Free Home Phone Service at Sears for $139.99!"--there is something very ironic about "free" for $139.99-

It's a great investment: divide what you're currently paying for phone service into $139.99 to see when you'll break even. Most people break even in a few months.

They're saying "phone service" is free, not the ooma device. You know no company would stay in business if they just gave away their products for free. I've been a very happy ooma user for over two years and although the initial investment of $200 was paid off in the less than six months, i no longer have to worry about landline phone bill for as long as ooma stays in business. Thanks OP !

Still, the wording is funny. I understood pricing.

I have had the original unit for almost two years. It works great. I expect the unit here has a small monthly regulatory fee like all new units do now. I haven't seen a Telo without them.

Google Voice,

That said I am a happy Ooma customer as well. Costco also lowered their price to $149.99

I agree, had my Ooma Hub for 1.5 years now, there are fees & whatnot for me (Around $4.50 a month now) but it is worth it. For $4.50 a month having a house phone is a good thing.

That's a good deal. Had mine for a couple years now too. It works well.

I've had mine for about a month now and I cannot resolve the "duplex" problem. That is, I pretty much cannot talk while the other person is talking and vice versa. It's almost like talking on walkie-talkies. It's very annoying. Other than this problem, the voice clarity is crystal clear almost 100% of the time. BTW, I've connected my Ooma between Modem and Router.

What is your Up/Down speed and latency?

I agree with the OOMA praises. Dumped the phone company and bought a hub and scout over 2 years ago. No regrets. The government fees and taxes are just ridiculous on a phone company land line.

Drat!

Not available for shipping. Wanted to send one to my daughter who is in a small town w/no Sears.

I installed an Ooma to my mom's place along with my own I can't stress enough how it works great. Especially from my Mom's since they got the no fee/tax. I have been also recommending OBiTalk with Google Voice.

If this was 2000, we would have been paid to use it
Then again, we know how well those companies fared....

White Rabbit tester here

I loved the service so much, I started to feel guilty and upgraded to the Telo. Still exempt from the taxes and get free premier services so I am a very happy customer.

Sears sucks so bad,,no wonder they are on the verge of going out of business,,sorry to see a once great company get so awful bad,,and their website is possibly the worst in the whole known universe..

I have Time Warner Cable. My speed is 20 down and 2 up. By latency do you mean ping? If so, according to Speedtest.net it is 5ms.

You hit the nail on the head! "no company would stay in business if they just gave away their products for free" Ooma gives away service for free! At some point, when the market is saturated enough, and people don't need to buy new hardware, their pyramid starts to crumble. Don't get me wrong, I bought one of these a couple years ago and it has been great, but at some point, this has got to flop. IMHO.

If you go by that logic, most consumer goods companies would be out of business. I have had Ooma for over 3 years now and never regretted it. Now that I have moved to a bigger house I am tempted to upgrade to Telo.

One left in Honolulu store but for $199.99

I find this really cool, thanks.

Keep in mind that ooma does not work for faxes at least not for me(even using the prefix that they suggest).

What phone number do you use? Current or new one?

dpid said:   Any way you can post the article from Consumer Reports?

Sorry, I only get the hard copy edition, not the online edition.

Hit *99 then pause before dialing fax number.

Have been using OOMA for 3 years now - pretty happy. For proper comparison, understand that free Ooma service does not include several features such as call forwarding, blocking unwanted calls, community blacklist, simultaneous ring, etc. These features are included in their premier plan which costs some money every month. Also, you need to pay around $3 per month in mandatory regulatory fees (some old accounts like mine are grandfathered into not paying those regulatory fees)

New to Ooma here.. what are the odds the company will stay in business for next few years -- just thinking from what I read here that if business model is thru initial upfront device sale but they have ongoing back end cost for providing the service then surely at some point the ponzi scheme (sorry strong word but that is closest) would have to give as number of subscribers to support go way up compared to device sales ... unless initial sales never cool pulling newer buyers, isn't it ?

I had one and it is decent. Better is the OBi100. Just do search on Amazon, it is way better and way cheaper, and I have no axe to grind. I use it all day, every day. Works great and the service is totally free. I have call blocking, call forwarding, conference calling, everything----free.

Doesn't the Tech. Details section on Amazon.com for Obi100 say that all calls are free till end of 2012. What after that ? Will the same trend continue or not ? Maybe they won some low price contract with some carrier and could offer this service but may raise rates starting Jan. 2013 onwards. Does anybody have some idea about this ?

The service is only "free" is the device is alive.
Maybe the expected life of the device is 5-years, so on average, people need to buy new device every 5 years. That would sustain the business.

My understanding is that obi uses google voice which has been threatening to not be free for a while now but it seems to keep getting extended. my understanding is that obi is great but may require a bit more work to set up

Thank you for sharing.

How come people don't just get the obihai and run Google voice on it? Seems cheaper to me.

EDIT* looks like I'm not the only one thinking this

Looks good. Thank you!!

Transferring your phone number can take several weeks to complete and requires a one-time charge of $39.99 (which is waived if you subscribe to one-year of Ooma Premier).

You can also port into Nettalk.
