I've had Ooma for about 3 years. I paid $225 and still use the older model. I previously had landline phone, Vonage, sunrocket and Net2Phone. It has worked nearly perfect, no phone bill, no fees. But as I understand now new ooma customer will pay a required small regulatory compliance fee and 911 service fee which for my zip code is about $4/month. Here is the ooma tax calculator for your zip code.... https://go.ooma.com/tax_calculator

I have an OOMA that is really free to sue.... There is no mention of 911 regulatory fees on the Sears site for this item, if I find there is, back it will be going.....

There is no mention of 911 regulatory fees on the Sears site for this item, if I find there is, back it will be going.....Almost everything to do with phone service has a 911 fee. We even pay $1 911 fee now when purchasing cards for prepaid cell service. And we pay general sales tax on the price of the card also. We didn't pay any of that until about 18 months ago.

yeah Sears must be closing out, none in the state of CA except El Centro and Westfield near Mexico....
As for the fees, ALL new OOMA customers from the last year or so have to pay for them, no matter which model they activate.

There is no mention on the item page. The ooma I have now was a refurb from Frys nearly 3 years ago and no fees....

Ooma started collecting fees about 3 years ago. The fees are related to the model purchased. The older model (i.e., no fees) was available even as recently as a year ago.

if you have an existing number can you use that? is there a port fee
"Number porting allows you to transfer your home phone number from your current service provider (whether VoIP or landline) to Ooma. You can port a phone number to the Ooma system for a one-time charge of $39.99 or get free porting request when you purchase a yearly subscription to Ooma Premier."

The difference is in the work to get it to work... Ooma is virtually plug and play.... Obi is play, and play and more play and maybe it will work....
Both require broadband.

I have my Ooma unit for a few months now. I have zero complaint. As the other poster said, setting it up is easy. Obihai can be tricky and a may be which is my case. The basic monthly Ooma fee is dirt cheap. I am very happy with it.

So, I took the plunge (thanks, OP!) and will port from Vonage. As far as I can tell, the most useful things I am giving up if I don't sign up for Premier are call forwarding and voicemail notification.
Anyone who is using Ooma who switched from Vonage or a similar service - is there anything else you gave up or miss with Ooma?
I did the same about three months ago. There were a few big changes for me:
1. I was on the international plan with Vonage with free calling to 60 countries. I now purchase the premier international plan. Even then my total cost is lower than Vonage 2. Call Busy Forward - With Vonage, if my home phone was busy, I would have the calls forwarded to my cell phone. I cannot do this with Ooma. They have something different. They can ring two phones at the same time i.e. when someone calls my home number, it rings my cell phone. I think they call it Simultaneous Ring or something similar. I was very surprised to see that Ooma could not do Call Busy Forward. I had this for 10 years with my local land line provider and with Vonage for the three years I had them. 3. Call alternate number when disconnected from the internet - Under Vonage, if the Vonage device is offline and not connected to the internet, I can have calls forwarded to an alternate number e.g. a cell phone or some other Vonage or non-Vonage number. With Ooma, you can do this as well but with an exception. As I understand it, you can do either item (2) listed above or item (3) but not both. i.e. either Simultaneous Ring OR Ring alternate number when device is disconnected from the internet. Wish it could do both.
Perhaps, there are other big changes but I did not need/use them and so do not know of them. Maybe others can add to this list

I miss all the fancy features of Vonage but not the price. With basic Ooma I have voice mail and call waiting only. What I have done is to give everyone my Google Voice # which ring both my Ooma and my cell phone.
With Vonage the voice quality was decent most of the time. With Ooma it is practically good all the time.
I was lucky if I could send a fax with Vonage at all. It was a hit and miss deal and most of the time it failed. With Ooma it has been 100% successful with fax.
For some crazy reasons occasionally I have to power off and on my Vonage adapter to work again. I have yet to do that with the Ooma unit.

I've had the "old" Ooma (without fees) for several years now. Use it on my work calls for my home office all the time. I've had maybe 2 dropped calls in several years. More reliable than my cell phone! Excellent quality...it works anywhere I plug it into high speed internet.
Consumer Reports (June 2012) rated Ooma the #1 phone service company, period. This included all other VOIP, Landline and Fiber-Optic phone services. 25 were rated. We've had Ooma for over two years and it's always been reliable and crystal clear.

This is a great product to get your telecommunications costs down: See my thread:
I typed in my zip code and it say I have to pay $3.77 in monthly fees which is $46 per year (911 tax, and all that) I would pass, as I am paying $20 a year on magic jack plus (initial cost is $69.95 for equipment)

Entering your gvoice account and password is not that hard. If it takes you more than 1-2mins to configure Obihai, you should return it. It's not cut out for you.

If there is a 3-4$ service charge per month. How does it make this cheaper over Magic jack(is there service charge for magic jack too?)?
