Way...way...way better. I have had Nettalk for a year now, after fighting through magicjack problems for a year, and was about to renew in a week for $29.99, but looks like I'll get this instead as I don't use my number anyway, I use google voice forwarding.
The quality is about the same as a landline, and far better than magicjack. With netttalk, I have never been cut off or had bad sound quality.

1. What is the cost to port your own number to nettalk duo? 2. I missed the ooma deal. How do they compare to each other for quality? 3. I have ATT DSL 3Mbs download and .47 Mbs upload. Is this adequate?

I have tried three of these and they do not work. I would not recommend that you buy a new one if they were selling it for $10. If you dont believe me, please call their customer service number on their website: http://www.nettalk.com/ I have patiently tried and was on hold for 4 hrs every time. Dont know if you remember the episode from Friends where Phoebe is waiting on hold for over a day to talk to customer service.
You have been warned.
Instead I use OBI (bought it from Amazon) with google voice and it works like a charm.

Instead I use OBI (bought it from Amazon) with google voice and it works like a charm.I used a NetTalk Duo for year without a problem. But since I chose to use my google voice number exclusively the NetTalk Duo did no longer fit. It uses early media, which means it actually answers every call. So with it answering every call all my google forwarding phones only rang once, then nothing.
This would be great for people that want to use their google voice number and only have it ring their home. Because it answers every call and continues to ring the phone port, you can use your home answering machine with your google voice account and bypass the google voicemail.
Why use a paid VoIP service when you can get a cheap Obi 100 gadget and (still) free Google Voice?
Even if Google starts charging for their service (I hope not, nobody knows till last days of December) I am sure they'll be very competitive price-wise.

I bought like $50 from the official website few months ago. for $20 is a steal!
I used it for a month now and pretty much satisfied with the quality of call.
few issues I had with this company : 1. customer service phone is ridiculously useless. no matter what time you call them, you must wait for hours before able to speak. Email is better. 2. Recently I had an issue with enhanced international calling plan. every time I tried to place an international call, I got busy tone. I tried different number and got the same busy tone as well. I'm waiting for them to investigate this issue. 3. Smartphone user is limited to call USA and canada only, regardless you have international call plan or not. If I knew this from beginning, I would rather to purchase calling card from 3rd party company. Vonage is much better on handling this issue.

They are plug and play. I have an obi110 sitting here for 2 years now still in the box... Far from plug and play.

Why all 3? Nettalk, ooma and PhonePower ? Isn't that redundant? I have netTalk and do have some problems with the reception from time to time - was thinking of switching to Ooma. Comments?

I have one HUGE concern with this. I just ordered it and when I look at the Invoice page, it shows the Net Talk Duo 2. That is not the same device they are advertising on the front page! The Duo 2 only comes with 3 months of service, not one year. If this is the Duo 2, it isn't really a great deal and there is no way to cancel the order or call to ask what they are doing. I've emailed to ask if is the orginal Duo or cut down Duo 2 and just get a canned response saying wait a few days for us to respond.

This is a great service. I have been using it since their inception. The quality has gotten much better over the years. I paid $80 but was grandfathered in and receive free service for as long as the hardware keeps working.

Can it be used outside the US: get two, give one to relatives who live abroad, get unlimited international calls? Or receive calls to a US phone number while you are outside the country?

Plug into a high speed internet from anywhere in the world, you will be calling out as from the number assigned to the unit. And you can be called at the same number as a US call from any number in the US not just a Nettalk unit.

RE: 3 months... or 12
The issue has me concerned. Nettalk themselves was selling some units with 3 months, though new as I recall, not refurbs.

I use Google Voice to make international calls(firstly dial local number then use international phone card) to save minute of my prepaid phone. But my problem is, it's very difficult to connect to other countries while using Google Voice(of course it connects easily to local service numbers.) I have to try so many times(20 and above)to get through it. If I use my prepaid phone, it always connects for the first time. What's the problem? Is it Google or the international phone card's fault? Will it be better if I use Obi or Ooma? Thanks a lot.
No taxes for me here in Missouri over the last few years when I pay the annual $29.95.

I sent a few hours yesterday with this thing and the in coming voice sounds fine But no one can understand the out bound voice it's just choppy noise.
I had it set up in my routers DMZ. Maybe it's my upload bandwidth. Although the phone service provided by brighthouse works perfectly!!! (for $10 a month!!)
And then I looked and saw that 1sale does not take returns and I felt like an ass for not knowing the policy's of the merchant.
Good Bye 1sale got me once, never again. PayPal interceded. Original ad terms 30 day money back guarantee. Must send back items, provide tracking and PayPal refunds money.
